"Royal" George LEONARD and Maria FRENCH
Introduction
This is the genealogy of the first three generations of Leonards in
Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. More recent details are also
available. For much of this information, I am indebted to my third cousin,
John Wright of Barrie, Ontario who may be contacted at
john.laurie.wright@sympatico.ca
and his late father, Fred Wright. Further details were gleaned from
the census records for Tiny Twp. 1861-1901; vital statistics currently
available at the Archives of Ontario and parish registers available at
the United Church Archives here in Toronto, Canada. In addition,
I have relied extensively on the following book of memorial inscriptions:
Ontario Genealogical Society. Monumental Inscriptions...Records of 60
Burial Grounds in Central North Simcoe, 1977. Please e-mail me
at karen.black@sympatico.ca
if you are aware of any omissions or errors. This genealogy is intended
for personal use only.

Generation 1
1. "Royal" George1 LEONARD, born about 1810 in England; died 21 Dec 1887; buried 26 Dec 1887 in St.John's Anglican Cemetery., Waverley, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. He married in 1835 in Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, Maria FRENCH, born about 1816 near Uley, Gloucestershire, England; died 10 Apr 1878 in Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, daughter of Samuel FRENCH and Sarah HALE.
Notes for "Royal" George LEONARD
George's birth date is estimated from the 1861 Census for Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada where he's 51. He has been born in England and is listed as an Anglican farmer, living with his wife Maria, 41, and their "Canada West" born children: Diana, 19; Rebecca, 17; John, 15; Maria, 13; Elizabeth, 7; Caroline, 5 and Mary Ann, 2. He is also still alive at age 61, in the 1871 Census for Tiny Twp., Div.1, p.14. In the 1881 Census, No.2, p.26, he is a widower living with son John and family.
Re: nickname. John Wright, a descendent, thinks "Royal George" is some kind of family nickname. There is some speculation that George or his father served on a British Naval Vessel named the Royal George. George's grandson also used the nickname "Royal George" (1863-1932).
It is understood that George Leonard first settled in Flos Twp., near Hillsdale (in the 1840s?) and Flos Twp. is provided as daughter Diana Wright's birth place on her death certificate. There was nothing in the Canadian Land Records Index to support this claim, although a George "Lanard" did locate on Con 7, E ½ Lot 16 in Medonte Twp. on Nov.18, 1853 (p.8983). The "1837 Home District Directory" also lists a "James Lennard" on Lot 1, Concession 69 in Medonte Twp. who may be a relation. There is no baptismal registration for his first child, Sarah Jane, who appears to have been born in 1837, probably in another township (Medonte?) since her mother Maria must have immigrated to Ontario about 1832 with her parents Samuel French and Sarah Hale. The remainder of George's ten children, except for John D., all have baptismal registers, indicating they were born in Flos Twp., Ontario, Canada. The number of Leonards in Ontario and the lack of any evidence pointing back to a parish or even a in England, has made it impossible to trace this line any further back. IGI records confirm that there were Leonards in the Yorkshire area who may have sired George. However, the Uley, Gloucestershire area is also a possibility since his wife's family came from there. To this date in 1999, no marriage registration for Maria French and George Leonard has been found to date to support this conjecture. CAUSE OF DEATH: Throat cancer. OCCUPATION: Farmer. RELIGION: Anglican. ADDRESS: Con.1, Lot 87, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co Ontario, Canada
George Leonard's descendants are still believed to be occupying the original homestead which is located on the highway between Waverley and Wyebridge in Ontario, Canada.
"Margaret J. Leonard (4 Apr. 1840 - 5 Feb. 1912)" is buried in near by Wyevale Union Cemetery. Is she an unmarried daughter belonging to this family? Note also the gap between Maria and Elizabeth's ages, indicating one or two children may have died young.
Notes for Maria FRENCH
Informed by John Wright of Barrie that Maria was the daughter of Samuel French (1788-1852) and Sarah Hale (1793-1862), which was confirmed by her death register. Maria's father had received a free land grant for some military service and the Frenches subsequently became mill owners in Waverley, Ontario. Cause of death simply marked "A" !
Maria is conspicuously absent from the 1871 Tiny Twp. Census ( Div.1, p.14), although according to her tombstone inscription she was not dead until 1878. Was she institionalized? Or was she just helping out with a newborn grandchild? Husband George was originally recorded as being married in this census, and in the remarks column was added "wife in parts unknown." His marital status was subsequently written over as "widowed," an obvious error.

Notes for Joseph HUTCHINSON
Age 27 when he married Harriet. Son of Edward and Jane. The Hutchinsons
had their first two children in Tiny Twp. and then moved to Manitoulin
Island, Ontario, Canada in 1878.
Notes for Harriet Charlotte LEONARD
Harriet was one of four young people in their 20s living with miller George Copeland, age 46 and his second wife Elizabeth, age 26. George Copeland was English born and had married Elizabeth in 1857. The Copeland offspring included Watson, 17: Hannah, 15; Charlotte, 13; Richard, 11 and Harriet, 9, probably all from George's first marriage, as well as Anna, 1. Almost everybody's religion in the household was Church of England and everybody except George had been born in "Canada West" (old Ontario). 22 year old Harriet's occupation is not specified, but she was undoubtedly a servant. Other employees included Mary Wiley, 24, Paul Vasseur, 23, who was the only RC and Joseph Hutchinson, 27.
Children of Harriet Charlotte2 LEONARD and Joseph HUTCHINSON were as follows:
+ 20 I Melissa Jane3 HUTCHINSON, born about 15 May 1865 in Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. She married Edwin Robert BECK.

born 28 Mar 1841 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; died 8 Jul 1912 in Midland,
Ontario, Canada, son of James WRIGHT and Margaret Jane MILLIGAN.
Notes for Dianah LEONARD
Ontario Vital Statistics. Deaths. (MS 935, Reel#201, #028747). Diana Wright died Sept.17, age 74, in County House, Tecumseth Township, where she was an inmate. She had been born in Flos Township. The 1901 Census gave her birth date 19 Nov 184, but this proved to be inaccurate when her baptismal record was checked. She was widowed at the time of her death. Her father was listed as George Leonard; "don't know" was recorded in the space for her mother's name. Diana died of a stroke, after a two week illness, although the immediate cause of her death was heart failure. Her physician was R.S. Brewster and the informant was J.A. Swan, Beeton (a name which appeared in other death records for this institution.) Buried as "Diane". Next of kin: George Wright. Funeral director: Rev. J.J. Elliot.
Notes for John WRIGHT
Birth year may be estimated from Census records for this individual.
He appears during census years 1861-1901 in Tiny Township, his occupation
designated as a blacksmith. (p.30, p.51, p.20, p.6, p.10.) The 1901 Census
gives birthday as Mar. 28, 1841. This information also available in family
charts which descendent Fred Wright gave the Ontario Genealogical Society.
Death date also provided by Fred Wright and validated in Ontario Vital
Statistics. Deaths. (MS 935, Reel #180, #028973.) Note that there is
a discrepancy between the birth year and his age and the one provided in
the 1901 Census.
John Wright died in Tay Township at the age of 77 from "queile? debility."
Physician H. Macdonald attended him from Apr.18-July 8. Death certified
by George Wright, Midland. N.B. Fred Wright indicated this burial place
in Lakeview Cem., Midland for John and his wife: N/W 29 Sec. 20 and Plot
1 Sec.19. However, their tombstone inscription was not included in Midland's
Past Inhabitants and I failed to find their tombstones during a 1994
personal search. Their grave locations were confirmed in a July 1995 letter
from Lakeview Cemetery Board, so tombstones may not have been erected.
My grandmother had told me that John Wright was a blacksmith. This,
along with the fact that he worked for John Ellery 1884- 1894, is also
confirmed in Bonnie R. Reynold's 1985 publication
Wyebridge...ANostalgic
Look at Yesterday, p.6.
The Wright-Leonard Family lived at Con.2, Lot 15 in Tiny Twp. which
had been purchased by John's father James in 1865. See Gazetteer...Simcoe

COLE, born about 1843.
Notes for Rebecca LEONARD
Rebecca appears in the 1861 Tiny Twp. Census at the age of 17, when she is still living with her parents. Richard Bannister, 11, who drowned and was interred in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Waverley, Ontario on 11 Aug 1874 may be her son.
Notes for David BANNISTER
If this individual was Rebecca's David Bannister, he appears to be the son of Catharine (d. 15 Apr 1882, 73 yrs) and David and he's probably the grandson of David (d.15 Mar 1885, 94 yrs, 3mths, 14 dys, Leicestershire, Eng. native). Others also buried in this family plot.
Children of Rebecca2 LEONARD and David BANNISTER were as follows:

Notes for John D. LEONARD and Ann Eliza FITZPATRICK
Curiously enough, there is no baptismal record for John, despite the existence of such records for all his sisters. John is a 15 year old schoolboy living with his parents when the 1861 Tiny Twp. Census takes place.
The County Marriage Registers...Simcoe County, 1858-1869, Vol. 12 indicate that "H.E" Fitzpatrick married John Leonard in 1866. (Ref. 1:250). Some speculation that the initial H. may stand for the name "Hana," but this may just easily be a misprint. As H.E. Fitzpatrick was also a marriage witness for Margaret Fitzpatrick to Henry Watson Copeland at St. James-on-the-Lines Anglican Church in Penetang, Ontario 11 Nov 1866, Ann Eliza and Margaret Fitzpatrick are believed to be sisters. Ann and Margaret may be daughters of Peter Fitzpatrick. If so, their brother Reuben L. (1845- 15 Aug 1866) is buried in St. John's Anglican Cemetery Cemetery in Waverley, Ontario.
John and his wife Ann lived on the Leonard homestead at Con. I, Lot 87 in Tiny Twp., according to Gazetteer...Simcoe Co..1872-73. In the 1901 Census, this was described as Lot 87.88, Con. I and was comprised of a six room house, with 2 buildings and 3 barns occupying 250 acres.
According to Will Type A, no. 5897, June 27, 1908, John died intestate May 15, 1905. His will was probabted in Hanley, Saskatchewan. His assets included all of Lot 87 in Con. 1, Tiny Twp., except west 50 acres there of and 4 acres in the E ½ of Lot 88 (value $6000). Total prop. $7500 but John's wife Ann Eliza owed John Anderson Ardagh $15,000. CAUSE OF DEATH: Train accident. Recorded in Monumental Transcriptions, p.5. Buried at age 60 with his wife "Ann E...age 78 yrs...their daughter Florence E.M. age 9 yrs...J.A. Milton age 67 yrs."

"J. A. Milton" is buried with his parents John and Ann Eliza and his sister Florence E.M., who had died at 9 yrs. May have actually died 11 Oct according to burial records. Resident of Midland. ADDRESS: Wyebridge, Ontario (circa 1905).
+ 45 iv Harriet Maria Jane3 LEONARD, born 18 Aug 1875 in Ontario, Canada. She married Robert Henry BURKE.

Waverley, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. Undoubtedly the two Florences are the same person. Aug 7, 1886 was given as the DOB on her tombstone; the Sep 26, 1887 date of birth appeared in her baptismal record.

Notes for James "Jim" William WRIGHT
James' birth date has been estimated from Census records for Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario. The 1871 Census (p.30), lists the oldest child of John and Diana under the name William and gives his age 9, suggesting he may have been born in 1861 or 1862. The 1881 Census (p.51), records the oldest Wright child under the name of James, and gives his age as 18, suggesting he may have been born in 1862 or 1863. I note his parents were married June 1861. Where was James in 1891? He re-appears in the 1901 Census for Flos Township with his new bride, claiming to be 30, but he was the same age in 1900 when got married.
His death date is also an approximation. Taken from newspaper publication date for two obituaries, probably from a Midland newspaper, which were stored in the James-Scarrow family Bible. James is fondly remembered by some of his grandchildren, especially Doris Merkly, whom he called Porky when he was helping out at the James-Wright family farm during the Depression.
The Wrights are rumoured to have separated because James was physically abusive. However, James left Emma. They had been living in Flos Twp., where he's listed as a labourer? in the 1901 Census. He must have worked in the local lumber mills. Around 1903, the Wrights may have moved to Elmvale, Ontario where my grandmother apparently acquired her grade 3 education. Jim his portion of Con 2, Lot 71 W.P.R. in Flos Twp. to his brother Samuel 30/04/1904 for $250, which is what he had paid for the property. (Bands Instrument #7986.)
James was a member of the Wyebridge Orange Lodge and a Liberal in politics.
Notes for Emma Catherine DWINNELL
Emma's birth date matches the one on her tombstoneand was later validated in the 1891 Census for Flos Twp. when she was reported as 6. My grandmother gave me one birth date (1883), although her own records match the tombstone inscription. Emma herself stated her age as 18 on her 1900 marriage certificate, although she was still 18 a year later during the 1901 Census in Flos Twp. A series of family tragedies and her father's re-marriage may have disrupted her childhood, as well as her sense of the passage of time, and in any case, she was almost certainly unschooled and illiterate.
Marriage transcription: "Wright, James, 30, a labourer, residing in the Township of Tay, born in Wyebridge, son of John Wright and Diana Lennard married Emma Dwindle, 18, residing in the Township of Flos, and born in Wyevale, daughter of John Dwindle and Ann Blunsen(sic) by licence on May 28, 1900 in Elmvale in a marriage performed by Rev. W. McLean and witnessed by Grace McLean and Miss S. Smith of Elmvale. Both Episcopalian." (Ontario Vital Statistics. Reel 102, #14918.)
Emma's death date was verified during a 1994 cemetery visit. Emma is
buried as the wife Herbert M. Johnson (1891-1959).
Children of James William3 WRIGHT and Emma Catherine DWINNELL were as follows:
104 I Ruth Hildred4 WRIGHT, born 11 Jun 1901 in Elmvale, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co., Ont., Canada; died 18 Jun 1991 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Orillia, Ont., Canada; buried in Waubaushene Cemetery, Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ont., Canada. My grandmother was very short, less than 5 feet tall, with very blue eyes, and hair that was once fair. Her young girl self is impossible to visualize; only one fuzzy snapshot of her exists. She was the firstborn of a 15 year old girl and a forty year old man. And she had aspirations, she must have, because she could read and write some. Her Simcoe County born parents had been illiterate, and her father turned out to be improvident as well. One of the first things she did with money she earned as a teenaged domestic in a Hillsdale, Ontario rooming house, was to buy herself a writing desk. Was this where she sat down and recorded her multiple descendants' vital statistics? She passed down all these details to me and she always remembered birthdays with a card, and in the cases of her 30 odd grandchildren, small cash sums. Her Christmas gift buying and distribution rivaled Santa Claus' organizational skills. I imagine the Fesserton, Ontario home where she raised her ten children was run the same way, although she was frequently pregnant, frequently sick with pregnancy related problems and frequently nursing. Eventually she developed diabetes, and her faculties were irrevocably destroyed by a stroke about ten years before she actually died, but she survived her husband by thirty years. Up to the time she lost her mind in Soldier's Memorial Hospital, she had been fiercely independent, unable to tolerate long stays in any of her daughters' homes.
105 ii William John4 WRIGHT, born 5 Jan 1903 in Elmvale, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 1967. Married Silena Forget. 8? children. Lived in Midland, Ont. Buried Waverly Methodist? No issue, but great-nephew Vernon Riley lived with them for several years before going back to his mother's home during his teens. May's niece Marion Wright also spent her last years living with the Dierlams. My great-aunt, who worked for many years on a Woolworth's lunch counter in downtown Toronto, was a kind-hearted, vivacious woman. During my early childhood, we spent many New Years with the Dierlams.

His son was institutionalized and his mentally handicapped daughter, Marion, went to live with her grandmother Emma Wright Johnson (nee Dwinnell) after Norm and Mildred separated. Lived in Midland, Ontario. John F. Wright indicated Norman's middle name was Jasper.

1912. Stillborn.

Notes for George Richard WRIGHT
Rick also appeared in the 1871 and 1881 censuses for Tiny Township as the second child in his birth family. Based on Fred Wright's charts and my visit to French's Methodist Cemetery in Waverley, Ontario, I know he married Epsie French in 1893 in Hillsdale, Ontario.
Extract of Midland Free Press obituary, May 23,1932: "George Wright of Unionville, died suddenly at the home of his sister Mrs. A. Urquhart last Monday. The funeral took place on Thur. afternoon and was conducted by Rev. Duce, Calvary Baptist. Pallbearers: William Drinkill, Charles Baker, Wesley Cripps, William Holmes and E. Guest. Dassie had apparently not been born at the time of the 1871 Census for Tiny Township (p.30). He is first listed with the Wright/Leonard family as a 10 year old at the time of the 1881 Census (p.51). He is no longer living with his birth family when the 1891 Census is taken (p.60).
