The Mulligans immigrated from Ireland to Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada before 1820. Joshua and William may have qualified for military grants. The brothers found a wilderness in Cavan Twp., except for the church called St. John's in Ida, Ontario. The handwritten parish registers for this church are available here at the Anglican Church Archives here in Toronto, Ontario. Many of the Mulligan children were baptized at St. John's and members of the Joshua Mulligan family are also buried there.
Joshua Mulligan's family remained in Cavan Twp., but his extended family spread throughout Peterborough Co. and into the bordering counties of Durham and Victoria. Some of the Mulligans also went "out west." This genealogy is an attempt to map the first four generations who settled however briefly in Cavan Twp., but it is far from complete. In addition to the parish registers for St. John's, Ida, census records and marriage registers have also been checked. A number of "genealogy" cousins have also provided information about their own branches and several books have been consulted, including This Green & Pleasant Land: Chronicles of Cavan Township, which was edited by Quentin Brown in 1990 for the Millbrook and Cavan Historical Society.
Since Cavan Twp. was once part of Durham Co., the following description of this township is from The Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Counties of Northumberland and Durham, Ontario, 1878 (p.vi):
Cavan is a well-settled township and contains excellent land. It is bounded on the north by the township of Emily, in the County of Victoria; west by Manvers, south by Hope and east by South Monaghan and part of Peterborough. It is principally settled by natives of Ireland and their descendants. The early Irish settlers called the township after the county of the same name in the north....Amongst the U.E. Loyalists and military claimants to whom early grants were made in this township, we find returned--...Richd. Shackleton...Jno. Follis...Joseph Swayne, Richard Staples...Wm Mulligan...Richd. Johnston...Moses Blackstock, Robt. Morrow, Hugh Maharry...

Generation 1
1. John?1 MULLIGAN married Martha? .
Notes for John? MULLIGAN
The following children are the earliest representatives of Mulligans in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, but proof is still required of their relationship to each other.
Children of John?1 MULLIGAN and Martha? were as follows:
+ 2 i Joshua2 MULLIGAN, born about Jun 1789. He married Ann CLARKE.
+ 3 ii William2 MULLIGAN, born about 1791 in Cavan Co., Ireland. He married MaryBLACKSTOCK.
+ 4 iii Robert2 MULLIGAN, born 1802 in
Ontario, Canada. He married Margaret "Ann"MCCULLOUGH.
Generation 2
2. Joshua2 MULLIGAN (John?1), born
about Jun 1789; died 25 Nov 1870 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario,
Canada; buried 29 Nov 1870 in St. John's, Ida, Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co.,
Ontario, Canada. He married on 24 Mar 1823 in St. Peter's, Cobourg, Northumberland
Co., Ontario, Canada, Ann CLARKE, born about 1801; died 14
May 1868 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada.
Notes for Joshua MULLIGAN
Joshua Mulligan and Ann Clarke immigrated from Ireland to Cavan Twp., Upper Canada via Hope Twp., around 1826. A registered deed of 1835 records the purchase by Joshua Mulligan for 50 pounds, of Lot 17, Conc.7, from Daniel Brand, the original Crown grantee. In the 1861 Census, the Mulligans are shown as living in a two story log house. The current house, which was built in the 1870s, has exterior walls comprised of three layers of brick with air space. Its dimensions, length to width, are proportionate, giving it a balanced appearance. Joshua Mulligan dictated his last will and testimony in 1870. Having divided his earthly goods among his children, he directed that he should be buried without any "unnecessary pomp or foolish show" beside his wife Ann, at the "north churchyard" (St.John's, Ida). Source: This Green and Pleasant Land, Millbrook and Cavan Historical Society, 1990. Joshua is assumed to be William's brother, since he was having children at the same time in the same place.
Notes for Ann CLARKE
Wm Macaulay performed marriage ceremony by special license. Wit: Archibald
Morrow & Irene Gilman. Age 72 when she died, but recorded as age 60 in
the 1861 Census.
Children of Joshua2 MULLIGAN and Ann CLARKE were as follows:
+ 5 i Sarah3 MULLIGAN, born 27 Oct 1823 in Hope, Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada. She married William WHITFIELD.
+ 6 ii Phebe3 MULLIGAN, born 25 May 1825 in Hope, Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada. She married Henry SEATON.
+ 7 iii Francis "Frank"3 MULLIGAN, born 1 May 1827 in Cavan Twp., Ontario, Canada. He married (1) Zerruah "Via" FEE.; married (2) Rose BARTHWOOD?.
8 iv Fanny3 MULLIGAN, born about 29 Dec 1828 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. She married ??? MILLIGAN. Entry in Mulligan Bible apparently reads "Mon. 29 Dec 1829." This date is based on her baptismal record, but needs to be checked.
+ 9 v John3 MULLIGAN, born 5 Jan 1831 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Elizabeth "Liza" M. WELLS.
+ 10 vi Henry3 MULLIGAN, born 12 Aug 1832 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Eliza G. WELLS.
+ 11 vii Ann "Annie"3 MULLIGAN, born 25 Feb 1834 in Cavan Twp., Ontario, Canada. She married Samuel GRANDY.
+ 12 viii Jane3 MULLIGAN, born 7 Nov 1835 in Elizabethtown, Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. She married Richard SWAIN.
13 ix Richard3 MULLIGAN, born 3 Jun 1837 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada; died 25 Jun 1912 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada; buried Jun 1912 in St. John's, Ida, Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada.
Cause of Death: Stomach ulceration .
Birth date recorded in his baptismal register and the family Bible differ; the family Bible records that he was born "Sat. 19 Aug 1837." Richard was said to be a carpenter and woodworker and probably built the present house. A feature of the farm was the presence of a good supply of water and this encouraged Richard in 1906 to install what was known as a hydraulic ram. Richard helped his sister Phebe after her husband was drowned. Phebe's youngest son, Harry, was the only Seaton to remain with his uncle and finally inherited the farm in 1912.
Source: This Green and Pleasant Land, Millbrook and Cavan Historical Society, 1990, p.418. Age listed as 78 in death register; must be incorrect since his DOB was provided in baptismal register. His age at death would mean he was born about 1834. To add to the confusion, there is a Richard, age 38 (born 1843) listed in the 1881 Census for Cavan (No.3, p.5), who has no dependents. When Richard's Seaton nephew and niece, Henry and Lilla, are found living with him during the 1901 Census, Richard's birth date is recorded as 19 Aug 1837.
+ 14 x Margaret3 MULLIGAN, born 19 May 1839 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. She married Joseph STAPLES.
15 xi Joshua3 MULLIGAN, born 15 Apr 1841
in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada; died about May 1847 in
Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada; buried 25 May 1847 in Cavan
Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. Family Bible records his birth/death
dates as: "Friday July 30 1841-1 Feb 1850;"a puzzling discrepancy. Age at
death appeared to read "9 yrs, 3 mths." Assumed to be same person.
3. William2 MULLIGAN (John?1), born
about 1791 in Cavan Co., Ireland; died about Nov 1841 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough
Co., Ontario, Canada; buried 20 Nov 1841 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co.,
Ontario, Canada. He married on 17 Mar 1827 in St. John's, Ida, Cavan Twp.,
Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada, Mary BLACKSTOCK, born about
1804 in Ryefield, Cavan Co., Ireland.
Notes for William MULLIGAN
William's name was extracted from son George's marriage register. He was age 50 when he died, according to burial register found for a William Mulligan in Cavan Parish. However, William apparently witnessed son Edward's marriage in 1855. Did he also marry Mary Ladycoat 10 Mar 1838 in Cobourg? Where there possibly two William Mulligans about the same in age in Cavan Twp.?
Also found an Upper Canada Land Petition, dated 3 Jul 1819, which refers to "William Mulligan, farmer of Township of Cavan and native of Cavan Co., Ireland and having just arrived in the province..." (Source: UC Land Petition, M12, 224, Film #C2201 available at the Archives of Ontario, Toronto, Canada.)
William's name on an 1817 map for Cavan Twp. suggests that he had in fact arrived at least a few years earlier in Upper Canada and was probably the first Mulligan to set foot in Cavan Twp. William Mulligan was living on Conc.11, Lot 3, which was the next Concession over from George and William Blackstock who occupied Lots 3, 8 and 18 on Conc.12; Hugh Maharry who occupied Lot 21, on Conc.12 and the Morrows who lived on Lots 19-20, also on Conc.12.
Notes for Mary BLACKSTOCK
Mary's maiden name was extracted from her son George's marriage register.
Her marriage register was later found in registers for Cavan Parish, where
she resided. Mrd by John Thompson. Wit: Samuel Graham & Amberson Murphy.
Possibly Moses Blackstock's much younger sister, since he was also a Cavan
resident. She also may also have been Moses' niece, through his brother George,
since she did name her oldest son George. We know from C.M. Blackstock's recent
book, All the Journey Through, that Moses' brother George had numerous
children, although his wife was unnamed and C.M. only traced her line of
descent through George's son William.
Children of William2 MULLIGAN and Mary BLACKSTOCK were as follows:
16 i Mary Jane3 MULLIGAN
+ 17 ii George3 MULLIGAN, born 7 Apr 1828 in Cavan Twp., Ontario, Canada. He married (1) Susan HEASLIP.; married (2) Margaret HEASLIP.
+ 18 iii Edward3 MULLIGAN, born about 1830 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Ellen FALLIS.
+ 19 iv William3 MULLIGAN, born 13 Nov 1831 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Lucy MONTGOMERY.
+ 20 v Stewart3 MULLIGAN, born 2 Mar 1835 in Cavan Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Mary HEASLIP.
21 vi Margaret3 MULLIGAN, born about 1838 in Ontario, Canada. I have found no christening record for Margaret in Cavan Twp. However, both a Margaret, age 21, and a Mary, age 18, appear in the 1861 Manvers Census with Stewart. Unfortunately, the birth places of the Mulligan girls are given as Ireland, although Stewart's is not. It's possible that Mary is Stewart's wife, though and Margaret is his sister-in-law, George's wife. Both the Mary and Margaret (Heaslip) Mulligan were born in Ireland.
22 vii John H.3 MULLIGAN, born 9 Apr 1841
in Cavan Twp., Ontario, Canada. He married Elizabeth , born 1846 in

4. Robert2 MULLIGAN (John?1), born
1802 in Ontario, Canada. He married Margaret "Ann"MCCULLOUGH, born
1800 in Ireland.
Notes for Robert MULLIGAN
This man may be a relation of Joshua's and/or William's since he is probably close in age to these men and resided in Cavan Twp., but the links among all three men still need to be established. A Robert Mulligan also married an Ann Lannin (widow) in Peterborough, Ontario on 7 Oct 1844. They were married by Rev. Davidson, a Meth. minister and their witnesses were John Kennedy and John English.
Notes for Margaret "Ann" MCCULLOUGH
First name obtained from daughter Eleanor's baptismal register.

a 24 year old resident of Manvers Twp. when she married James Fee. She was
recorded as Robert and Margaret's daughter.

"I think that the William you mention is also my William. He was baptised
5th Jan 1811 at St Marks Ninebanks, son of William and Mary (Keenleyside),
who were married on 11th May 1807 at Allendale. William had two sisters Rebecca

27 years. The family emigrated to Canada around 1832, I have two letters
from thomas which mentions William and the rest of the family, (will attach
to email for you to read). I came across Thomas's death mentioned on Peter
and Barbara Boltons web site www.nhb.com/hunter, who kindly found and posted
on their site his obituary notice ( can also view letters as well). One thing
that threw me was that his sister that is mentioned Mrs Wm Carveth, I did
a search and found her death notice only to find her going by the name of
Jane." (2 May 2002, "Lesley Hall" <Lesley.Hall2@btinternet.com>)

Ireland; died 20 May 1914 in Ontario, Canada.
Notes for George MULLIGAN
George's parents were confirmed by his baptismal register. Married by Rev. Robinson the first time; marriage witness was Samuel Magill. (Susan's cousin/brother-in-law.) He was age 32 when he married in May 1860; age 43 at time of 1871 Manvers Twp. Census. George immigrated to McMurrich Twp. about 1880, accompanied by his second wife Margaret Heaslip and their four boys and three girls, plus his brother Stewart and his wife Mary (Margaret's sister). George was already 52 and Margaret was 41. They left Bobcaygeon with a team of horses, passing through Rosseau and North Seguin before they got to Bordeau. George and Margaret located on Lot 31 of Concession 14 in McMurrich Twp. Their lot was at the corner of four townships, including Monteith, Ryerson and Spence.
Here is George's family 1881:

By 1883, George had title to 200 acres. Ed Thornton writes that George and Margaret had a nice log house on a hill built by a Norwegian from Bear Lake with four rooms up and four rooms down and big back kitchen with a separate set of stairs to the bedrooms. George and Margaret remained on that corner of Bordeau for at least 30 years. Anecdotal evidence suggests that they spent some time in Manitoba, but both George and Margaret died in McMurrich Twp. here in Ontario, Canada. Their house was occupied by the Jack Andersons from 1920 to 1928, but eventually it was torn down.) "The migration of settlers from the Township of McMurrich and many of the surrounding townships to Manitoba was a consistent pattern between 1890 and 1920. It did not take the early pioneers long to recognize the futility in attempting to farm the thin layer of soil that rested on the bedrock below. The prairie provinces were providing the settlers with next best opportunity to farm. The story has often been told about the community of Rockhill (an excellent descriptive name for the surrounding topography) when the 10 to 11 families packed up their belongings and in one week had all together left by train to Manitoba. They named their new settlement Morden, after the dominant family name. Annie Morden married William Mulligan, and undoubtedly some of their family also went to Manitoba." (Source: Janice Madill's A TrackThrough Time..., 1994, p. 149.) Appears in the 1891 McMurrich Twp. Census at the age of 53 with his second wife Margaret age 40 and their children: William, 20; Jane, 17; Thomas, 11; George H., 9; Henry, 7; Mary A. and Margaret 9 mths. The family was W. Meth. Notes for Stewart MULLIGAN
Irish parentage. Born about 1837 according to 1861 Manvers Twp Census; age was given as 24. No marriage or death registers have been found for Stewart. Stewart's identity has been well established with the discovery of his baptismal register in Cavan Twp. His parents William and Mary (Blackstock) Mulligan had been in Cavan Twp since 1819. Other evidence suggests that Mulligans had immigrated to the United States from Ireland before coming up to Cavan. Sometime after his birth, Stewart's parents left Cavan for Manvers Twp.
As the Mulligans and Heaslips were neighbours, Stewart and Mary (Heaslip) Mulligan probably met in Manvers Twp. As of Dec. 1997, no marriage register has been found for them, but the birth dates of their children suggest they married young. Five children were born in Manvers Twp., but Stewart Mulligan moved his family sometime after the 1871 Census was taken. The Mulligans may have spent some time in the Victoria Road area where their eldest daughter Maggie met and married William George Black, an Eldon Twp resident, in 1879.
Stewart and George drove their team of horses from the Lindsay area in the late 1870s. Stewart had qualified for a free land grant (300 acres) in the bottom corner of Monteith Twp., Parry Sound in August of the same year, a half mile west of his oldest brother George in the neighbouring township of McMurrich. Both townships bordered on Spence. The closest hamlet was Bordeau; the closed town was Sprucedale. The whole area was densely bushed and still is today. The Mulligans farmed, but the land was also logged.
Stewart Mulligan was in Monteith in 1879 according to an historical atlas for the area and his address is given as Bordeau on the marriage registration of his daughter Frances in 1896. Although there appears to be no record of him or his wife and children in the relevant censuses in 1881 or 1891, he appears in Spence Twp. in 1901 along with his wife Mary, two of their children and their grandson James Geddis. (His birth date is recorded as 20 Oct 1836, probably a mistake, as his baptismal dates comes from a primary source.)
Some of Stewart's descendants still live in the Sprucedale area, mostly the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of John and Mina Mulligan. John and Mina are buried in St. Paul's Cemetery near Sprucedale, Ontario, so Stewart and Mary probably are too, but there are no registrations for their deaths up to 1919. Stewart and Mary could also be buried in unmarked graves in Pioneer Cemetery near Sprucedale. There are less than twenty scattered monuments in this out of the way cemetery, a cleared field hidden in the middle of a coniferous forest.

William's ancestry is unconfirmed. Possibly his death register will provide the identity of his parents; his marriage register probably will not. William's place and date of death and information about his career, his marriage to Victoria Mitchell and some of his children were obtained from an obituary in the Peterborough Examiner dated April 23, 1913. As a young man, William had lived in Peterborough for a number of years, and for a short time after his marriage, in Newcastle. He then settled near Omemee where "he was an ardent worker in the Methodist Church and Sunday school, becoming a teacher and superintendent for a great many years."

Notes for John Henry BLACK
Source, birth date : 1901 Canada Census, Bexley Twp., Victoria Co., Ontario,
p.7, line 1. The discovery of John and Maggie's marriage register disputes
Haw's claim that they were married when they were only 17 and 15. John was
actually 21; Maggie was almost 18. Their first child may have been born before
this marriage took place. John and Maggie were married by Henry Wilkinson
and their ceremony was witnessed by U? E. Wilkinson & B. Webb, both of
Victoria Road. John and Maggie's numerous children were probably born on
Balsam Lake Road in Bexley Twp., Victoria Co., Ontario. He worked on the
Laidlaw estate and drew logs. He moved his family next door to his parents'
homestead on Con 11, Lot 18 in Eldon Twp. 5 Dec 1906. John paid Hugh McLeod
$1750. for the 88 acres remaining in this lot. Mcleod was not the first owner
by any means. James Atkinson was the original Crown grantee in 1839. Between
1851 and 1906, several McLeods occupied the lot, although various corporations
assumed ownership temporarily. For example, in 1857, the Muncipal Council
Peterborough was granted all 100 acres. Then on Oct. 19, 1893, Hugh McLeod
mortgaged 88 acres to Lindsay Lodge No. 100 F.O.O.F. Finally, in Feb. 1901,
the Corporation of the Township of Eldon leased a right of way to this property
for $15. Possibly this was to gain access to communal weaving looms located
in the log cabin. The current owner is great-grandson Daryl Black who lives
there with his wife and 2 year old daughter, Sarah Marie Black. (Source:
Simcoe County.Eldon Township.Copy Book.) The house, marked by a large sign
outside, inscribed Black Homestead, recently had a dormer added to the second
story in order to accomodate Daryl's height. The house the Black/Mulligan
family took over in 1906 was actually located further back on the property.
According to Daryl Black, this was the house that burned to the ground when
the upstairs curtains caught fire after a child played with matches. The
fire forced the Blacks to occupy the weaver's cabin. A newer, brick building
and three garages are also located on this property.

He met and married Mimi while working on the railroad in the South River area, where she was a cook. They lived at the corner of Spence Twp. through out their marriage. John Mulligan, age 26, appears in the census for Monteith Twp., Spence and Christie Twp. Teenaged cousins Mary Ann and Jane Mulligan of McMurrich Twp. both marrried middleaged men on the same day in 1882. According to Janice Madill's "A Track Through Time...," (1994, p. 152), Mary's husband Robert Geddes came to the McMurrich Twp. area from Wheatly, Ontario, following the death of his first wife. His two children, George and Margaret, remained behind with relatives. Robert Geddes appears to have located first in Spence Twp., being listed there on the settler location map of 1879. Mary Ann died at age 20 following the birth of her child. Robert Geddes remained in Spence Twp. and the children were raised with help from the Mulligan family. Rows, New Stevenson, Holytown, Lanark Co., Scotland; died 16 Dec 1935 in
Victoria Road, Eldon Twp., Victoria Co., Ont., Canada.
Notes for William "Bill" George BLACK
Cause of Death: Old age.
Source, birth date : 1901 Canada Census, Bexley Twp., Victoria Co., Ontario, p.7. There is a discrepancy between birth year (1887) provided in 1901 Bexley Twp. Census and one provided on his tombstone. However, his WWI Attestation Paper records his birth date as 12 Apr 1889, the same year his brother Lewis was supposed to be born. Bill was working out west when he enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 18 Feb 1916. Pte. #186833 was described as having dark brown hair, grey eyes, a medium complexion and being just over 5'6" tall. Bill served in France and England. He met my grandmother Liz while he was stationed in England, but they were married in Shotts, Lanark, Scotland. After he was discharged as "medically unfit" here in Toronto on 6 Mar 1919, his bride followed him to Canada. Liz's oldest sister, Jean Anderson, and her youngest sister, Ina Bryans, also immigrated to Ontario, Canada. Bill and Liz raised their family in Victoria Road, Ontario. Bill supported his family by working at the local stone quarry. He used to bicycle everywhere he went. The family lived above a river, right across the street from the school and the church. But Liz was already sick with Bright's Disease. There were no antibiotics. When she died near Christmas time, her six children ranged in age from seven to fifteen. Bill was unable to raise his children. Rina and Jack went out to work; Ina, Isobel, Billy and Betty were sent to live with their maternal aunt and uncle, Ina and Bill Bryans who were living on the Palestine Concession in near by Eldon Twp. Once again, Bill sought work out in Western Canada, but he retired to a white house in Glenarm, Ontario. His oldest daughter, Rina Nicholson of Eldon Twp., looked after him as he aged. His Glenarm house is now occupied by his granddaughter, the former Catherine Nicholson.

Cause of Death: Bright's Disease
Source, birth date : Scotland. of an entry in a register of births, 1861-1965,
#127059 (Holytown, Lanark Co). Liz may have gone by the name "Elizabeth Crawford",
which is probably the name her parents intended to put on her birth register.
A baptismal register might confirm this fact. Liz loved both books and nature.
Housebound in a wheelchair for the last six years of her life, she also wrote
many letters, none of which survive. A river ran behind her house in Victoria
Road, and some of the letters she wrote were about the pollution caused by
the large General Store.

Lilly gave birth to eleven children, all born at home, on the original William Mulligan homestead (her uncle's place). The Sturgeon family sold their farm in the early 1940s and moved into Huntsville. Their daughter, Anne Skinner, provided the Sturgeon family history.
