Descendants of

William Joseph NELSON and Lydia ENZLEY

INTRODUCTION

Some say that the Nelson/Ensleys were the descendants of United Empire Loyalists, but so far no evidence has emerged to back this claim. However, both the Nelson and Ensley surnames were so favoured by their descendants, that they have provided an unbroken chain from my grandfather Samuel "Nelson" James back to William and Lydia. In addition, several of William and Lydia's children had also married Scarrows whose descendants have been well-documented by Nancy Scarrow of Oakville, Ontario (ndscarrow@sympatico.ca). This is the genealogy of the first three generations of William and Lydia's descendants. Marriages without issue may not have been included, but information about more recent generations is available. If you are aware of any other errors or omissions, please contact me at: karen.black@sympatico.ca

1. William Joseph1 NELSON, born about 1803 in Harriston, Ontario, Canada. He married in Ontario, Canada, Lydia ENZLEY/ENSLEY, born about 1803 in Ontario, Canada; died about 1848.

Notes for William Joseph NELSON

In the 1851 Ontario Census, Wellington Co., Eramosa Twp., Joseph, a widower, is listed with the following children: Sarah 20, William 15 (missing is twin Abigail), Henry 13 (also missing is 11 year old Ellen Amelia), Lydia 7, Joseph 5, and John 3. They are apparently living on Conc. 4, Lot 5, near Rockwood.

Descendant Morna Hoskins believes that the Nelsons were United Empire Loyalists, from Pennsylvania, United States. In support of her claim, there is a listing of a Joseph W. Nelson in the Naturalization Registers for 1831 and 1832. (RG5, B47, Vol. 3, Reel C 15692, entry no.10) Only non-British residents, i.e American citizens, were required to take this Oath of Allegiance following the War of 1812. Nelson was a resident of Prince Edward Twp. at the time, and would have been in Canada for at least seven years. Earlier, Isaiah T. Insley is listed in Vol. 2 of the same register, entry no. 37. Joseph Ensley, age 24, was enlisted in 1st Reg. of Prince Edward Militia in 1829. Also enlisted were Henry Insley, age 29 and Isaih Insley, age 27, who may be Lydia's kin.

Insley and Nelson families are found in the 1851 Prince Edward Co. Census, but it would appear that William and Lydia (Nelson) Ensley were living near Rockwood, Ontario on Con 4, Lot 5 at this time. Both William and Lydia were Canadian born, but Lydia died between 1848 and 1851. There is no record of this family owning land in Eramosa Twp., nor is there any indication of where William and Lydia were buried. A cemetery in Rockwood was destroyed, however.

Notes for Lydia ENZLEYor ENSLEY

Lydia apparently died between 1848 and 1851, as her husband Joseph appears in the 1851 census as a widower, whose youngest child is 3.

Notes for Ellen Amelia NELSON

FamilySearch's IGI (1988 ed.) contains an entry for Ellen Amelia. However, Scarrow information is suspect in the IGI, according to Nancy Scarrow. She does not know who has indexed these individuals. I know that Ellen Amelia's birth family was entirely Ontario born, however, referring to the 1851 Ontario Census for Wellington Co., Eramosa Twp., p.83. Ellen's parentage was also confirmed on her death certificate. Death place irroneously described as Milton Twp. in index, although death was clearly reported by her son-in-law Arthur James of Fesserton, Ontario and she is buried in nearby Waubaushene Cemetery. On closer examination of her death register, it appears that her birth and death places were mixed up. Given name also indexed incorrectly as Helen. Died from pneumonia, after her heart weakened. Her husband was likely still alive in 1915 and living with his daughter Lydia's family. There is no record of him being buried next to his wife, but then there are no early records for anybody in Waubaushene Cemetery. CAUSE OF DEATH: Pneumonia

Notes for Henry SCARROW

IGI erroneously describes him as Ontario born. Appears to have immigrated from Freckenham, Suffolk, England with parents James Scarrow and Susan Radford, and at least 7 siblings, about 1842. There is no record of this family owning land. May have lived on his brother William Scarrow's homestead. Working as a labourer during the 1871 and 1881 Censuses. Religion variantly described as Methodist or Episcapalian. Unable to find his burial place, although his wife is buried near her oldest daughter's family. Henry's death date was provided by family historian Nancy Scarrow. However, I was unable to locate Henry's death in the 1922 Vital Statistics Death Index currently available at the Archives of Ont. Place of death? Place of burial? OCCUPATION: Labourer (1851) RELIGION: Methodist; also Episcapalian

Notes for Lydia Susanna Scarrow

Lydia suffered greatly from asthma, and was invalided after the birth and death of her last child Thomas Henry when she was in her early 40s. (This family suffered a double tragedy the year Thomas died; daughter Bessie's two year old drowned in a post hole.) Lydia is believed to have died during an asthma attack.

Notes for Arthur JAMES

Homesteaded on Conc. 12 Lot 7 (Fesserton) Tay Twp. Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada

The James-Scarrow family Bible listed Battle, Sussex, England as Arthur's place of origin. However, the birth certificate I finally tracked in Dec. 1994, indicated he was actually born in Sandhurst, Kent. (Sandhurst is only a few miles from Battle.) Arthur called himself a Welshman, suggesting either of his parents, Samuel James or Harriet Small, may have been born in Wales. He was also definitely widowed when he married my great- grandmother Lydia Scarrow; their marriage certificate confirms this fact. His first wife and two children are rumoured to have died in a fire.

The prospect of work in a thriving lumber industry undoubtedly attracted Arthur to Simcoe County. He immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1885 and was snapped up by Carter's Lumbermill in Fesserton, Ontario, eventually becoming a yard foreman.

Once in Simcoe Co., Arthur was also attracted to Lydia Susanna Scarrow, a fair haired young woman, who was part of package deal; she came with a brown eyed girl child. Baby Bessie was two and a half when they married in Orillia on Nov 4 1885. Possibly a man who had lost his first family in a fire, found the idea of this ready made family especially appealing. Arthur settled down with Lydia and Bessie in Fesserton, Ontario.

Children of Lydia Susanna3 SCARROW were as follows:

200 i Bessie Anne4 SCARROW, born 8 Jun 1883 in Washago, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 1973; buried in St.James-On-the-Lines, Penetang, Ontario, Canada. James-Scarrow family Bible. Bessie's birth place was obtained from her marriage certificate. She listed Arthur James as her father; perhaps she didn't know she was illegitimate. She is buried with her second husband Harry Turner (1883-1969) and her Uncle James Scarrow (1857-1949).

Children of Lydia Susanna3 SCARROW and Arthur JAMES were as follows:

201 i Elize4 JAMES, born 7 Jun 1886 in Fesserton, Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 12 Jun 1886; buried in Waubaushene Cemetary, Ontario, Canada. 1. James-Scarrow family Bible. 2. 1994 visit. CAUSE OF DEATH: Prematurity.

202 ii Harriet4 JAMES, born 5 Jun 1887 in Fesserton, Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 4 Oct 1971; buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Midland, Ontario, Canada. . CAUSE OF DEATH: Cancer

203 iii Rhoda Elsie4 JAMES, born 11 Apr 1889 in Fesserton, Tay Twp, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died Jan 1973; buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Midland, Ontario, Canada. Rhoda was a Fesserton midwife who assisted in the births of her brother Nelson's children, but had difficulty carrying her own children to term. Two of her children survived, but she lost twins. She also adopted her half-sister Bessie's grandchild, Alan.

204 iv Arthur Edmond4 JAMES, born 25 Sep 1891 in Fesserton, Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 1969; buried in Waubaushene Cemetery, Ontario, Canada. Married Mary A. Brandon 7 Dec. 1910. Reared at least 11 children in Toronto.

205 v Lydia Susanne4 JAMES, born 21 May 1893 in Fesserton, Tay Twp, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 29 Sep 1973; buried in Coldwater Cemetery, Ontario, Canada. Married Harry Taylor 24 Dec 1913 and Finlay McCuaig 3 Dec 1924. CAUSE OF DEATH: Train accident

206 vi Alice Emily4 JAMES, born 24 Mar 1896 in Fesserton, Tay Twp, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; buried in Coldwater, Ontario, Canada. James-Scarrow family Bible indicates she married Alex Mowers 5 Aug 1916. They had one son, Clarence Mowers. Between marriages, she gave birth to twins and may have put them up for adoption in Sault St.Marie. She then married Bill Oliver and ran a roominghouse in Toronto. Their daughter Ila became deaf due to meningitis. In later years, Alice kept a boarding house in Toronto.

207 vii Samuel Nelson4 JAMES, born 4 Dec 1897 in Fesserton, Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ont., Canada; died 15 Jan 1963; buried in Waubaushene Cemetery, Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ont., Canada. The collapse of the lumbering industry meant that Nelson could not depend on working in a sawmill like his English immigrant father or his Ontario born mother had. So he took a tailoring course in Toronto after WWI. Then he farmed a little, while working as a baker, both in Midland and in Waubaushene, at a store called Thiffault's. Somehow he pulled his growing family--a new baby arrived every two years-- through the Great Depression without going on Relief. Also fought in WWII. CAUSE OF DEATH: Emphysema OCCUPATION: soldier, tailor, baker, farmer RELIGION: Anglican .

208 viii Thomas Henry4 JAMES, born 19 Mar 1901 in Fesserton, Tay Twp, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 20 Sep 1902; buried 22 Sep 1902 in Waubaushene Cemetery, Ontario, Canada. Died after contracting scarlet fever, although apparently Thomas was a sickly baby who had yet to walk. Date discrepancy between death certificate and Bible/tombstone. CAUSE OF DEATH: Scarlet fever.
