The Newenden parish registers still need to be checked for the earlier members of William's and Harriet's family. William was on parish relief according to 1851 Sandhurst Census. William and Harriet's seventh and subsequent children were christened in Sandhurst, which pinpoints their move as sometime between 1837 and 1841.

Harriet and Samuel must have been first cousins. Christening and census records indicate that both Alfred William Small (1849- ?) and Samuel James Small (1853-?) were her "base-born sons", arriving before her marriage to her cousin. However, as her second child's name indicates, he probably was Samuel's son.

During the 1851 British Census, Samuel was listed in bailiff Edward James' 1851 house as a servant, along with Lawrence ?, age 29, and Wm. Henry, age 26, both who had been born in Sandhurst.
Samuel's marriage register indicates that he, his father Samuel James and his father-in-law, William Small, were all employed as labourers at the time of his marriage to his cousin, Harriet Small. Samuel was a bachelor, Harriet was a spinster and both were of full age.Their marriage was solemnized by Alfred C. Lawrence, Rector and witnessed by David and Jane Crisford, who are possible relations of the parties involved, but whose identities are unknown at this time.
Samuel was also recorded as shepherd in 1861 and a farm bailiff in1871. During the 1881 British Census, Samuel and Harriet were living in Bexley, Kent Co. with their three youngest sons: William, 15; Thomas, 12 and George, 8.

Presumably Ellizabeth Turk was the wife's sister, since she had been born in Hastings, Sussex.

Notes for THOMAS HENLY SMALL:

After the Smalls were thrown out of Bedgebury, many of them immigrated to New Zealand because they had no place else to go. However, Thomas remained in Sandhurst. He must have purchased Bell Farm some time after 1881, since we know he was a game keeper at Castle Gate in Sandhurst during the census. The size of his house indicates that he must have had some money, but the source of this money is a mystery. Bell Farm still exists in "central" Sandhurst across from the post office and the Town Clock. In 1997 I was given a tour of the 400 year old, Elizabethan-style house by Herbert's son, Tom Small. The house is now a two family dwelling, which Tom shares with his nephew's family. Tom's half retains most of the ancient timber beams and a huge walk-in fireplace. His nephew's half is probably more modernized. The minister at St. Nicholas Church in Sandhurst first told me about Tom Small and when he met me, he assumed my interest was in his museum style house, and I was very happy to be given a tour.

1861 Sandhurst Census gives Thomas' birth place as Northiam, although both the 1851 and 1881 censuses indicate that he was born in Sandhurst. During the 1881 Census, Thomas was a game keeper at Castle Gate in Sandhurst.

During the 1881 British Census, William Marshall, a 16 yr. old nephew, was also living in Alfred's household. Alfred lived in Rolvenden with his family. Some say he may have had a drinking problem, but this is pure conjecture. However, Alfred was apparently the "natural son" of Harriet Small. He was born four years before Harriet married Samuel James. Nevertheless, his relationship to head of household--Samuel James--is given as "son" during the 1861 Census.

The James-Scarrow family Bible listed Battle, Sussex, England as Arthur's place of origin. However, the birth certificate I finally tracked down this Dec. 1994, indicated that he was actually born in Sandhurst, Kent. Sandhurst is only a few miles from Battle. Magpie Cottage no longer exists. Arthur called himself a Welshman, suggesting either of his parents, Samuel James or Harriet Small, may have been born in Wales, but this has proven not to be the case. His Welsh roots must have been more remote.

Little is known about Arthur's first marriage to Eliza, except that in 1881, they were living in Bexley, the same town as Arthur's parents. Perhaps they newly weds, since they were still childless. Eliza must have died somewhere between 1881 and 1884 when Arthur decided to immigrate. Some say that Eliza and their two children, who were presumably born between 1881 and 1884, died in a fire.
The prospect of work in a thriving lumber industry is probably what drew the young widower to Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Arthur was snapped up by Carter's Lumbermill in Fesserton, Ontario, eventually becoming a yard foreman. According to the 1901 Census for Tay Township, he was earning $325. per annum. (This Carter's Mill relocated in B.C. under "Fesserton Timber Mill.)
Once in Simcoe County, Arthur was also attracted to Lydia Susanna Scarrow, a fair haired young woman, who was part of package deal; she came with a brown eyed girl child. Lydia was the oldest daughter of an English father, Henry Scarrow, who had immigrated to Eramosa Township, near Guelph, Ontario in 1842 and an Ontario-born mother, Ellen Amelia Nelson.

Lydia, too, was probably drawn to Simcoe County by the offer of employment in the lumber industry. She was working as a cook in a lumbermill at Longford, when she met the brown eyed man who gave her Bessie. Bessie presented no impediment to Lydia; the expectant mother may have stayed with her older brother Edmund in Tosoronto Township. And then, somehow in 1884, Lydia met Arthur. Baby Bessie was two and a half when they married in Orillia on Nov 4 1885. Possibly a man who had lost his first family in a fire, found the idea of this ready made family especially appealing.
Arthur made his home with Lydia and Bessie in Fesserton, Ontario. Eventually the family owned 69 acres above a hill, and another 35 acres below this hill, along the shores of Matchedash Bay. A railroad bed and then a highway bisected these two parcels of land. The James homestead was on the lower half. This would become Arthur's daughter Rhoda's place, and later still the house belonged to Rhoda's son, Arthur Rice.
Arthur James also lived in the house above the hill, in a vain attempt to alleviate his wife Lydia's asthma. Their youngest son, Nelson and his wife Ruth (my grandparents) assumed ownership of this farm when Arthur took sick in 1936. By now Lydia had been dead for nearly ten years, and Arthur was back living in the homestead below.
A large framed photograph of Arthur and Lydia, probably taken when they were in their early 40s, is in my cousin Alan James' possession.

Entries, along with one for her own marriage, are recorded in the James-Scarrow Family Bible, probably in Lydia's hand. She is also listed in the 1861 Census for Eramosa Township along with her parents and her older brother Edmund, as having been born in Ontario (p.18). It looks like her parents were living on brother William Scarrow's homestead at the time. She appears again with this family in the 1871 Census for Eramosa Township (Div.3, p.37). She is not with them during the 1881 Census, nor have I found her in any subsequent area she gave

as an address prior to her marriage to Arthur James.
Longford Mills, Ontario where she worked as a camp cook, is almost certainly where she met the brown eyes man who impregnated her. Her only brown-eyed child was born before she married Arthur James; in fact Bessie was born before Arthur James had even immigrated to Ontario. Bessie's marriage certificate records her birth place as Washago (which is very near Longford), but I've checked the 1881 Census for this area without finding any mention of Lydia. I did come across her brother Edmund's name,though,in Tossorontio Township where he was living with his Irish bride, Susan Morrison. Edmund later farmed in the Orillia area, and Lydia moved to Fesserton with her husband Arthur, not far away. Throughout her life, Lydia maintained close contact with her Scarrow family. At least two of her siblings were married in Fesserton where she lived, although they weren't residents and almost certainly her mother spent her last years with her, since she died in her home and is buried near her in Waubaushene Cemetery. Lydia's older brother, Edmund Scarrow, who only had one child, is buried with the aforementioned Bessie in Penetang, Ontario.
Lydia suffered greatly from asthma, and was invalided after the birth and death of her last child Thomas Henry when she was still in her early 40s. (This family suffered a double tragedy the year Thomas died; daughter Bessie's two year old drowned in a post hole.) Lydia is believed to have died during an asthma attack.
