This history was only possible with notes from ALLAN BIRNEY in Cobourg, Ontario, KATHLEEN BIRNEY-BISHOP of California who wrote a booklet called "What Papa Told Mama and Mama Told Me" and many others who have contributed their research for this site.
It is believed that The Birney name started in the Netherlands. The family (or part of it) moved to England, Scotland, and finally to Ireland in the 1200's. I have heard that there was a Birney Castle in Scotland and a Birney Square in Ireland, but I have no other information about them.
There are at least three possibilities concerning the source of the Birney name, i.e. Norse, Spanish, and Huguenot. Mrs. Kathleen Birney-Bishop of San Diego in a letter dated August 23, 1977 provided information on her knowledge of the early Birney family history: Quoted from her booklet: "12 brothers left the Netherlands in the early 1200's - after 500 years (I think) 5 remained in Scotland, 5 went to England and 2 to North Ireland. A cousin of my father told me that when her dad's father wanted to marry a Scot girl he had to get permission from the Danish government".
The book "A Genealogical History of the Milesian Families of Ireland", Heraldic Artists Ltd., Dublin Ireland 1968, lists the derivations of the name BYRNE as: Burne, Burn, Burns, Burney, Birney, Barney, Barns, Barnes. Byrne is considered a name of Milesian descent. The Byrne family name is a very old name in Ireland. The County of Wicklow was, in older times, all Byrne land. This was before the 1400's. Birney is considered to be a name of Northern Ireland, so how that came to be when Wicklow is in the southern portion of the country, I do not yet know. Milesius was King of Spain, whose sons and nephew colonized Ireland. Surnames were apparently introduced by these people and go back to the time of Christ and earlier. Heremon, the eighth son of Milesius, cut off his hand and threw it ashore to be first to claim the land as he approached the northeast coast of Ireland.
Mrs. McLeod understood from information passed down through the Nixon family that the Birneys "were farmers, small land owners and their address was either Garnalle or Carry go laugh". She remembered her father using those names and that he had corres-ponded with relatives at those addresses. She stated in one of her letters that she was not sure of the spelling. There is another document from a Toronto researcher showing the spellings as Garmalle and Carry Go Lough. Carrigolagh is a town-land within Ballyshannon in the Parish of Inismacsaint. This parish is in the Enniskillen area of Fermanagh. Many of these early Birneys came from the same area. McGuiresbridge is about 15 miles east of Enniskillen and Fivemiletown is about 10 miles north of McGuiresbridge. Another townland containing many early(1800-1820) records is Ardgart. This townland lies directly north of Carrigolagh.

I have tried to put this family together as best I can. I would realy like to hear from anyone who can tell me if I got it right or not. There must be some descendents around somewhere to help sort this out???? The earlier Birneys were born in County Cavan, Ireland. The Bushfields were from McGuires Bridge, County Fermanagh, Ireland (same place as my own origins) James Gillespie Sr. ran away from his family's home and made his way to the Pa. USA area about 1784

William Birney Sr. was born in Sleivebane, Ireland. William Birney Jr. born Tipperary, Ireland, married Rose Sheridan on April 13th 1864 in St. Kilians Church, Sandhurst, Victoria. Both of them gave their address on the marriage certificate as Whroo. William was a miner on the gold fields of Whroo and lived his life there. Three sons Noble, William and John continued on at Whroo and purchased a battery. William was the first to leave c1912.John moved to Stanhope in c1915 and Noble stayed on for a few more years.
When it gets to George Birney and Sarah Bell, the spelling of "Birney" became "Bernie". In a note provided by Ross Bernie, along with much information about his family in NSW..To quote the history: "Sometime between leaving Slievebane and settling in Robertson the spelling of their surname was changed from Birney to Bernie. It could have been done deliberately, to distinguish him from his nephew, George Birney who emigrated about the same time, or accidentally by officials spelling the name as they hear it."
