The Village of Umiujaq
Hudson Bay Coast
We are the students from the village of Umiujaq. We are
going to present our village to you.
Geographic Situation:
The first families who came to the village of Umiujaq were
from Kuujjuaraapik. They came here in 1985. The village of
Umiujaq is located 125 km north of Kuujjuaraapik and 150 km
south of Inukjuak. Umiujaq is situated on the eastern shore
of Hudson Bay. East of the village is Guillaume Delisle Lake
(Richmond Gulf). North of the village is Minto Lake,
Nastapoka River , and Nastapoka Falls (Patiqtuuk). South of
the village is Le Goulet (The Gully) where the waters of
Guillaume Delisle Lake (Richmond Gulf) drain into Hudson
Bay. Little Whale River (Qilaluratsiuvik) is located a
little further south of Le Goulet.
The Village:
There are about 300 people who live in Umiujaq. There are
about 66 houses. The Coop Store and the Northern Store
provide consumer goods and groceries. We have the local
municipality, the Corporation Northern Village of Umiujaq
(CNV of Umiujaq). We have a recreation centre, Kalliq. We
are serviced by a nursing station, social services, and an
FM radio station. There is a school (Kiluutaq), a police
station, a garage, and an airport. The current Mayor of the
village is Robbie Tookalook. The municipal councillors are:
Paulossie Cookie, Paulossie Tookalook, Masta Crow, Mina
Esperon, Nellie Tookalook, and Davidee
Niviaxie.
The School:
At Kiluutaq School, there are about 100 students in primary
and secondary. There are 13 classrooms, a library, and a
gym. The students make up 9 groups, they are:
- one Inuttitut kindergarten class
- one grade 1&2 primary Inuttitut class
- one grade 3-7 primary English class
- one grade 3&4 primary French class
- one grade 5&7 primary French class
- one grade 6 primary French class
- one secondary 1&2 French class
- one secondary 3-5 French class
- one secondary 1-5 English class
Life in the Village:
For social activities we play volleyball at the school gym
every Monday and Friday evening. We play ice hockey at the
new arena and floor hockey at the recreation centre. In the
summer and fall we play baseball outside a lot. We also play
Inuit games. During the Christmas holidays we play games
indoors and outdoors for prizes. Certain people like to
hunt, fish, and camp a lot. Children like to slide on the
snow and ice. They also can skate on the road because it is
hard packed snow(in the winter).
When we are students, we can also work, during the summer
time. The job opportunities are: cashier at the Coop and
Northern Stores, working for the municipality and at the
municipal garage, for the school, or for Inuit housing (home
improvement).
We are the secondary french students 3-4-5 and we made
this text in order that young people and everybody from
everywhere can know our little community. We wish that our
village will grow in the future. We hope you enjoyed our
text.
See you!
