In this document, I will show you who the following are:- The Comforter, The Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit, The Spirit of Truth - The Wisdom of God.
All text taken from the version of the King James Bible
Some bibles use the term Holy Spirit, however, the King James Bible uses the term Holy Ghost most of the time. The term "holy spirit," is used once, Ps.51:11; "holy Spirit," is used five time, Is.63:10 & 11; Eph.1:3 and Eph.4:30, and "Holy Spirit," is mentioned only once, Luke 11:13 in the King James Bible.
Jesus tells his disciples, and in essence tells us:-
John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments. - see Matt.5:19; Matt.19:17-24 and Ten Commandments, also The Great Commandments
John 14:16-18 - And I (Jesus) will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. (17) [Even] the Spirit of Truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (18) I (Jesus) will not leave you comfortless: (orphans), I will come to you.
Jesus is telling his disciples, that when he goes, or is crucified, he will not leave his disciples comfortless, or orphans (without something to guide them,) - he will send the Comforter.
John 14:21-25 - He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. (22) Judas saith unto him not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world: (23) Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. (24) He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. (25) These things have I spoken unto you, being [yet] present with you.
So once again Jesus is indicating that we are to keep his word/commandments and both he (Jesus) and the Father will abode or, reside, with us
John 14:26 - But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
In the above verse, Jesus is speaking with his disciples, and we are told, the Comforter is the Holy Ghost.
the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, -
Luke 24:19 - And, behold, I (Jesus) send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
behold, I (Jesus) send the promise of my Father upon you: -
Is.44:3-4 - For I (the Lord) will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: (4) And they shall spring up [as] among grass, as willows by the water courses. - See - Fountain of Living Waters vs. Cisterns
Acts 2:1-4 - And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they (the disciples), were all with one accord in one place. (2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (3) And there appeared unto them (the disciples) cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (4) And they (the disciples) were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The first time the Holy Ghost is mentioned in the Bible is in: -
Matt.1:18 - Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
So now we have established the Comforter as the Holy Ghost, John 14:26, that would abide in the disciples forever, John 14:16, and that it was the Holy Ghost that impregnated Mary, Matt.1:18.
Let us move on now to establish the Spirit of truth: -
John 15:26 - But when the Comforter is come, whom I (Jesus) will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, he shall testify of me:
he shall testify of me (Jesus) -
I John 5:6-7 - This is he that came by water and blood, [even] Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. (7) For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word (the Son), and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
and these three are one
John 10:30 - I (Jesus) and [my] Father are one.
John 1:1 & 14 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (14) And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 16:7-11 - Nevertheless I (Jesus) tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (8) And when he is come (the Comforter), he will reprove, (or convict) the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (9) Of sin, because they believe not on me; (10) Of righteousness, because I (Jesus) go to my Father, and ye see me no more; (11) Of Judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
John 16:13-15 - Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (14) He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you. (15) All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, (Jesus), that he shall take of mine, and shall shew [it] unto you.
See John 14:26, above again.
I John 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
ye have an unction -
See Is.44:3, above again, also
II Cor.1:21-22 - Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, [is] God; (22) Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
Heb.1:9 - Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, [even] thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
So the Word (the Son), the Holy Ghost and the Comforter, all come from the Father.
Let us continue on with the Spirit of Truth - The Wisdom of God:-
John 14:17 - [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 16:3 - Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew (show) you things to come.
I John 2:2-8 - And he (Jesus) is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world. (3) And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. (4) He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (5) But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. (6) He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. (7) Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. (8) Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
John 3:11 - For this is the message (or, commandment) that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. - See The Great Commandments; Love One Another With Righteousness
I John 4:6 - We are of God: He that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
Is.8:20 -To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, [it is] because [there is] no light in them.
To receive the Spirit of God, we have to confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh and is of God, I John 4:2 and we are to love one another, for God is love, I John 4:7, but this is the word that we have heard f rom the beginning, I John 2:7-11 and if we are of God we will hear him - the spirit of truth, I John 4:6. Therefore if we do not tell you the word according to what is written, then we also have no light in us Is.8:20, and Jesus is the light of the world, John 8:12. - See - Jesus is the Light of the World.
However, the world cannot receive the Spirit of truth -
John14:17 - [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye (the disciples) know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Rom.8:5-7 - For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded (or, the minding of the flesh) [is] death; but to be spiritually minded (or, the minding of the Spirit) [is] life and peace. (7) Because the carnal (or, the minding of the flesh) [is] enmity (or, hostile) against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Here is the wisdom of God -
I Cor.2:5-8 - That your faith should not stand (or, be) in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. (6) Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor the princes of this world, that come to nought: (7) But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, [even] the hidden [wisdom,] which God ordained before the world unto our glory: (8) Which none of the princes of this world know: for had they known [it,] they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Let me explain "are perfect" before I continue with the "wisdom of God".
are perfect - (see - I Cor.2:6 above)
Eph.4:13-16 - Till we all come in (or, into) the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: (14) That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; (15) But speaking (or, being sincere) the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ: (16) From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Now I will continue with the "wisdom of God," -
I Cor. 2:9-16 - But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (10) But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. (11) For what man knoweth the things of man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (12) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God: that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (13) Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (14) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them,] because they are spiritually discerned (judged). (15) But he that is spiritual judgeth (or, discerneth) all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. (16) For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may (or, shall) instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
So here we have the Spirit of truth, the wisdom of God, - the word that we have heard from the beginning and if we do not tell you this word according to the testimony or doctrine of the bible, then there is no light in us.
The world (or, field - people of the world,) are not able to receive the Spirit of truth because they do the things after the mind of the flesh - lie, cheat, swear, covet, kill etc, - the sins of the world - the breaking of the commandments, because they are carnally minded, or are of the minding of the flesh and are hostile against God. And the people have been hostile against God from the beginning when Adam and Eve partook of the fruit of good and evil, Gen.3:6 That is why John 14:17 says ... the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: ....
You are the one who must exercise self-control; you, have the will power to say no; you, have the choice of whether you are going to break the laws of God or not; you, have the power to resist Satan, because every time you sin or break a law you have just made Satan very happy. Just thinking about lusting after another person is a sin. If you get angry you may lose your temper, if you lose your temper it could lead to one of swearing, hitting, hating or killing - these are just some of the sins - and sin is transgression of the law, and the love of God is not in him. - See - Sins of the Tongue or Speech; What Defiles a Person, also, Iniquity and Vanity
You will have to figure out a way to keep your bad emotions under control - for me - I count to ten slowly, to myself, then take a deep breath, and say to myself, there Satan, I will not get anger, or swear, or whatever it happened to be - the point is - you, have to figure out what works best. You may not be totally successful in the beginning, but you should improve with practice and over time it will come easier. You will fall down once in a while, but it should happen less frequently, and in fact over a long period of time of exercising self-control, it should not happen very often.
When you exercise self-control over your bad emotions, then the love of God can live in you and you will be spiritually minded, or minding of the Spirit and your life will be peaceful.
In the beginning, man received the spirit of God, but the serpent beguiled or fooled Eve and she partook of the fruit of good and evil and Adam did likewise. Adam could have prevented all of this evil on earth if he had just followed one commandment - not to eat of the tree of good and evil. Adam had dominion, or was master, over all the animals and over his wife. He was given this responsibility and he failed to keep just one law. Now there are many laws, but there are ten main laws or commandments to keep.
the Spirit of God -
Let us take a look at when "the Spirit of God," is first mentioned in the Bible, sometimes referred to as "the Spirit."
Gen.1:2 - And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
So, the Spirit of God has been with us from the very beginning.
I Cor.12:3 - Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: (Gr. anathema), and [that] no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
I John 4:2 - Hereby know, ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
I John 5:1 & 3 - Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and everyone that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. (3) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grevious. - See - Ten Commandments, also The Great Commandments.
Keeping the commandments is not something new, see
I John 2:7-11 - Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. (8) Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. (9) He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. (10) He that loveth his brother (that is non-sexual love) abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. (11) But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not wither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
In the next scripture, Jesus was asked a question by a very clever lawyer to see if he could tempt Jesus, to tell him which of the commandments was the greatest.
Matt.22:36-40 - Master, which is the great commandment in the law? (37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (38) This is the first and great commandment. (39) The second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
