Let us begin this Bible study with a prayer, O God, thy heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom and knowledge, so that I may be able to understand this document, in Jesus name. Amen.
Let me begin by giving you the definition for the word -
fire - #4442 - N.T. - AV - fire, fiery. This word and number can be found 74 times in the New Testament.
The word "fire" - #784 - O.T. - 1d) altar-fire, 1e) God's anger (fig.); has other meanings also.
Although I gave you some of the meanings for the word "fire" from the Old Testament, however, the phrases that I will be explaining will be mainly from the New Testament.
a furnace - #2575 - N.T. - probably from #2545 - AV - furnace; 1) a furnace; 1a) for smelting; 1b) for burning earthen ware; 1c) for baking bread. This phrase can be found in Matt.13:42, 50; Rev.1:15; 9:2.
probably from - #2545 - N.T. - AV - burn, did burn + 2258; light - 1) to set on fire, light, burning; 2) to burn, consume with fire. This number can be found 12 times in the N.T.
Heb.12:29 - For out God [is] a consuming fire.
Remember: - God is a Spirit: .... - John 4:24
So spiritually speaking God is a consuming fire
The "furnace of fire," Matt.13:42, 50, and "a furnace," Rev.1:15, and a great "furnace," Rev.9:2 - are of a "spiritual" furnace
Matt.3:10 - And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.
Matt.7:19 - Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. See - Parable of the Fruit - Tree of Life
Matt.3:12 - Whose fan is in his hand, and he (Jesus) will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Matt.13:40-42 - As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of the world. (or end of the age/or time) See - Parable of the Kingdom and Sower - Part I (41) The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; See - Iniquity and Vanity (42) And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matt.13:47-50 - Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: (48) Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into the vessels, but cast the bad away. (49) So shall it be at the end of the world: (or end of time) the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just. (50) And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matt.25:41 - Then shall he (Jesus) say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: See - Judgment of the Nations and The Good Shepherd
So the "fire" and the "furnace of Fire," are the burning of the evil spirit(s) within each of us, and if you are truly baptized into the Lord, he will burn out the evil spirit(s) within you.
Let us look at -
Matt.3:11-12 - I (John the Baptist) indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he (Jesus) that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he (Jesus) shall baaptize you with the Holy Ghost, and [with] fire: (12) Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he (Jesus) will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
The "Holy Ghost" is a spirit that works within each of us to teach us, to guide us, and to help us, if we truly want to live our lives in the way of the Lord; and the "fire" is a "spiritual" fire which burns out the evil spirits which try to get us to live contary to the Lord. this is not a fire which will burn your flesh that may result in a blister, but a "spiritual" fire within you.
... but he (Jesus) will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire - Matt.3:12 - "the chaff" are the evil spirit(s) which will be burned with unquenchable fire.
Heb.12:29 - For out God [is] a consuming fire
But don't forget when you read the word "fire," and apply the meaning as a "spiritual" fire, that there are good spirits and bad spirits, or positive spirits and negative spirits - see Matt.17:15, and Mark 9:22, refer to an evil spirit "fire." Also see - Tares
But most of the scripture which has the word "fire" in them, refer to "good" spirits, let us look at -
Matt.25:41 - Then shall he (Jesus) say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
So the everlasting fire is prepared for -
the devil and his angels:- Matt.25:41
Matt.13:40 - As therefore the tares (the evil spirits) are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. - See - Tares; also see, Parable of the Tares of the Field
Now let us lood at the definition of -
"the lake" - #3041 - N.T. - probably from #3040 (through the idea of nearness of shore) - AV - lake - 1) lake
I will not go into #3040 at this time, because it does not pertain to this document.
The exact phrase "lake of fire," is found in Rev.19:20; 20:10, 14, 15
In Rev.19:20, we find the beast and the false prophet were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. the word "brimstone" has been explained further down in this document.
In Rev.20:1-3, we find an angel has come down from heaven which has the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand, and the angel lays hold on the dragon, the serpent (the one which lied or deceived the woman in Gen.3:1, 4-5) the Devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up and set a seal upon him (Satan) that he could not deceive the nations (or, people) until a thousand years had gone by, then after that, Satan is allowed to be free for a little while.
Now during this thousand year reign of Jesus when Satan is locked up and cannot influence the people, the people will then be able to see, hear, and understand the word of the Lord, and believe in him (Jesus).
Then in Rev.20:7-8, when the thousand years have expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison and he will once again go out to deceive the nations (or, people) which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom [is] as the sand of the sea.
Now, some people may tell you that Gog and Magog are places that can be found on the map, and this may be true, but notice what it said in the above verses - Satan shall be loosed out of his prison and he will once again go out to deceive the nations (or, people) which are in the four quarter of the earth, Gog and Magog, - now if this refers to a place on the map, how can it be in the four quarters of the earth?
Gog and Magog refer to a group of people, and they will be those who are ready and willing to live contray to the ways of the Lord, and they (Gog and Magog) and they compassed the camp of the saints, (or, put a circle of people around the saints,) and around the beloved city, and fire (spiritual fire) came down from God out of heave, and devoured them - Gog and Magog - those who want to live contary to the ways of the Lord.Remember - Satan and his evil ones, or evil followers, are not going to win - God will win, and those who wish to live in the ways of the Lord.
Now in Rev.20:10, we find - ... the devil that deceived them (the people,) was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the falso prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. - See - Judgment of the Nations.
the word "torment" - means to be absent without the Lord, to be grieded, to be in anguish, to vex with grevious pains (of body or mind).
Let us look at -
Matt.8:28-29 - And when he (Jesus) was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. (29) And, behold, they cired out, saying, What have we todo with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
We also find the word "torment" and it's counterparts used a number of times in the story of the rich man. Let us look at a couple of the verses.
Luke 16:23 and 28 - And in hell he (the rich man) lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. (28) For I have five brether; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into his place of torment.
I have explained the above story in the document, Where Are Heaven and Hell, but briefly what this means, is that those who do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the begotten Son of God, who lived on earth in the flesh, who (Jesus) offered himself as a sacrifice - that is, he became a sweetsmelling savour when he was crucified for the sins of the people.
Now back to "lake of fire," -
In Rev.20:12 - ... the books are opened and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
"the dead," are those who have not been baptized by the Lord with the Holy Ghost and with fire - Matt.3:11. Also refer back to "fire" above.
Continuing with "lake of fire," -
Rev.20:13 - And the sea (of people) gave up the dead (those who do not believe in the Lord Jesus or who have not been baptized by the Lord with the Holy Ghost and with fire) which were in it; and death and hell (those who have previously expired) delived up the dead (refer to "the dead," above,) which were in them: and they were judged every man (or, person) according to their works.
Matt.7:19 - Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hew down, and cast into the fire.
Continuing with "lake of fire," -Rev.20:14-15 - And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
At this time, those who do not wish to follow the ways of the Lord, but wish to live contrary to the Lord's ways and understanding, will be cast into the lake of fire - the second death, to live in torment day and night for ever and ever - Rev.20:10 This is a spiritual death which one lives - in which they will be grieved or be vexed with grevious pains of the mind, to live in anguish - to be absent without the Lord.
And among those which will have their part in the lake of fire are -
Rev.21:8 - But the fearful, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Now let me give you the definition and explanation for -
brimstone - #2303 - N.T. - probably of #2304 (in its original sense of flashing) - AV - brimstone; 1) brimstone; 1a) divine incense, because burning brimstone was regarded as having power to purify, and to ward off disease
This word and number can be found in Luke 17:29; Rev.9:17, 18; 14:10; 19:20; 20:10; 21:8
probably of #2304 (in its original sense of flashing) - N.T. - from #2316 - AV - devine, Godhead; 1) a general name of deities or divinities as used by the Greeks, 2) spoken of the only and true God trinity; 2a) of Christ; 2b) Holy Spirit; 2c) the Father
This number can be found in Acts 17:29; II Peter 1:3, 4
from #2316 - N.T. - of uncertain affinity; a diety, especially (with #3588) the supreme Divinity - AV - God, god, godly, God-ward + 4214; 2) the Godhead, trinity, 2a) God the Father, the first person in the trinity, 2b) Christ, the second person of the trinity; 2c) Holy Spirit, the third person in the trinity - There are others, I did not list them. This number can be found 1343 times in the New Testament.
Now to explain "brimstone," from the above definitions in the "spiritual" sense. It is - a devine incense, because burning brimstone was regarded as having power to purify - this is done by God
It is a divine (or, God) incense, which has the power to purify, and to ward off disease. The "evil spirits," are a disease - the evil spirits want to live contray to the ways of the Lord.
Rev.8:3-4 - And another angel came and stood at the alter, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer [it], with prayers (or, add it to the prayers of all saints upon the golden alter which was before the throne. (4) And the smoke of the incense, [which came] with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
incense - Rev.8:3
Eph.5:2 - And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
with the prayers (or, add it to the prayers) - Re.8:3
Rev.5:8 - And when he (Jesus) had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, (or, incense), which are the prayers of the saints.
the smoke of the incense- Rev.8:4
Ps.141:1-2 - LORD, I cry unto thee: make hast unto me, give ear unto my voice, when Icry unto thee. (2) Let my prayer be set forth before thee [as] incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. - See - Pray and Prayer - also see - Rev.8:3-4 above again
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice - Ps.141:2
Lam.3:24 - The LORD [is] my protion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
my portion - Lam.3:24
Ps.16:5 - The LORD (Jesus) [is] the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
Jer.10:16 - The portion of Jacob [is] not like them: for he [is] the former of all [things;] and Israel [is] the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts [is] his name.
Remember - Jacob's name was changed to Israel, and Israel refers to the house of Israel, or the twelve tribes of Israel. You must decide if you are of one of the tribes of Israel or of one of the offspring of Rachael's or Leah's handmaidens. - see Gen.35:23-26
So, Jesus became out incese - our sweetsmelling savour, Eph.5:2, and when we lift upour hands in prayer to God, this is our portion of sacrifice, Ps.141:1-2; Lam.3:24; Ps.16:5 and Jer.10:16. - Also see - Pray and Prayer.
Let us look at what it says about fire and brinmstone in -
Luke 17:29-30 - But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. (30) Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
If God did not spare the people of Sodom, but rained fire and brimstone from heaven on them, then he will not spare you, unless you are keeping God's commandments. See - The Ten CommandmentsParable of the Fruit - Tree of Life
Let us end this Bible study with a prayer - O God thy heavenly Father, please help me to be a better person each day, to follow the commandments, and help me to strive each day to be more in thy presence, in Jesus name I ask. Amen.
