PARABLE OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

In this Lord's Word Bible study, Parable of the Good Shepherd, John 10:1-16, I will show you what Jesus wanted you to know and understand about getting into the kingdom of heaven.

Before I begin, I want to first give you a little background.

With the Old Testament, there was no way the people could enter the kingdom of heaven, so Jesus came and offered the New Testament to the Jews, (or the house of Judah), first. But because Jesus was not teaching the same doctrine that their father Abraham and the other prophets had taught them, they did not believe him, viewed him with suspicion and rejected the new gospel. So then Jesus offered the New Testament to the Gentiles or the house of Israel.

Because the Jews did not like what Jesus was teaching, he was crucified, so thus, Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice, or "sweet savour," - that is he purchased us with his own blood so that we would have a way of redemption and forgiveness of sins. - See - Baptize, Salvation, Faith, Dead and Death.

All text taken from the King James Bible

Let us begin this Bible study with a prayer, O God, thy heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom and knowledge, so that I may be able to understand this document, in Jesus name. Amen.

We should not hate our brother, or, brethren because -

I John 3:15 - Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

I John 4:20 - If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

This is a "spiritual" love of one another, not a physical love.

I Cor.7:19 - Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. - See - The Husband and The Bride--The Kingdom of God

Let us begin -

Verse 1

John 10:1 - Verily, verily, I (Jesus) say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

Is.56:10 - His watchmen [are] blind: they are all ignorant, they [are] all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, (or, dreaming, or, talking in their sleep), lying down, loving to slumber.

Jer.23:21 - I (the Lord) have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

blind - (from Is.56:10 - above

Matt.15:14 - Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind, both shall fall in the ditch.

Is.9:16 - For the leaders of this people (or, they which call themselves blessed) cause [them] to err; and [they that are] led of them (or, they that are called blessed of them) [are] destroyed (or, swallowed up).

Matt.23:16 - Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the god of the temple, he is a debtor!

Luke 9:39 - And he (Jesus spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

they are all dumb dogs - (from Is.56:10 - above)

Phil.3:2-3 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision (3) For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Gal.5:15 - But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

beware of the concision - circumcision

Rom.2:28-29 - For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither [is that] circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: (29) But he [is] a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcion [is that] of the heart, in the spirit, [and] not in the letter; whose praise [is] not of men, but of God.

REMEMBER: God [is] a Spirit: they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth - John 4:24

Gal.5:2 - Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.

Acts 15:1 - And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, [and said], Except ye be circumsiced after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

Col.2:8 - Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments (or, elements) of the world, and not after Christ.

Gal.6:15 - For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

a new creature -

II Cor.5:17 - Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] (or, let him be) a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

In summary, what Jesus is telling us in John 10:1 is:- he has not spoken to these ignorant watchmen or prohets, yet they give prophecy, and these leaders of the people who call themselves blessed, all those who do not believe in Jesus Christ, cause the people to err or lead them astray, so that they are destroyed or swallowed up. Jesus says in Matt.15:14 and Luke 9:39 the blind leaders lead the blind, or , the blind lead the blind, and both shall fall into the ditch.

We are told to beware of the concision, or circumcision; and here is where the leaders are leading the people astray - the circumcision of the flesh outwardly is not important, what is important is the inward circumcision of the heart, which is worshipping God in the spirit. - see - Rom.2:28-29; Phil.3:2-3; I Cor.7:19 and John 4:24 above again, also see - The Husband and The Bride--The Kingdom of God, for more information on what circumcision means in the Bible.

The people are warned to beware not to be spoiled by the philosophy and vain deceit after the traditions of men, after the rudiments or elements of the world instead of following Christ. - see - Col.2:8 above again.

And Jesus says that if these people try to climb up, to be with him, in some other manner other than by the door into the sheepfold, is fooling himself and is a thief and a robber.

Verse 2

John 10:2 - But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

Acts 20:28 - Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock -

I Tim.4:16 - Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

I Peter 5:2 - Feed the flock of God which is among you, (or, as much as is in you), taking the oversight [thereof] not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

John 21:15 - So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He (Simon) saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He (Jesus) saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

the Holy Ghost hath made you overseer - (see Acts 20:28 above)

I Cor.12:28 - And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Eph.4:11 - And he gave some apostles; and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and teachers;

which he hath purchased - (see Acts 20:28 - above)

Eph.1:7 - In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Col.1:14 - In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins:

I Peter 1:19 - But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Rev.5:9 - And they (the four beasts and the four and twenty elders) sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

with his own blood - (see Acts 20:28 above)

Heb.9:14 - How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot, (or, fault) to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God. - See - Baptize, Salvation, Faith, Dead and Death

whom we have redemption through his blood - (see Eph.1:7 - above)

Heb.9:12 - Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption [for us].

save thyself - (see I Tim.4:16 - above)

Ezek.33:9 - Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. - See - Iniquity and Vanity

So the meaning of John 10:2 is: - to enter in by the door, one must feed or teach the people God's word or doctrine and be faithful in doing the job which he gave us to do. - see I Cor.12:28, and Eph.4:11 above.

We are to warn the wicked of their ways, but if they do not turn, then they shall die of their own iniquity, but we will have done our job and will have delivered our own soul, and we have eternal redemption through the blood of Jesus as he died for us and took our sins.

Verse 3

John 10:3 - To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

the porter openeth - (the door - see John 10:3)

I Cor.16:9 - For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and [there are] many adversaries.

I Peter 1:12 - Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

adversaries - wicked/evil spirits - See - Parable of the Kingdom and the Sower Scriptural Definitions; also see I Peter 5:8, as well as, the phrase below - "[there are] many adversaries."

things the angels desire to look into -

Eph. 3:10 - To the intent that now unto principalities and powers in heavenly [places] might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.

I Peter 3:21-22 - The like figure where unto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: (22) Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

Acts 14:27 - And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he (Jesus) had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

Col.4:3 - Withal praying also for us that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I (Paul) am also in bonds:

Rev.3:7-8 - And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; (8) I (Jesus) know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

[there are] many adversaries - see I Cor.16:9 - above)

Acts 19:8-10 - And he (Paul went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. (9) But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he (Paul) departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus (10) And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the LORD Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

II Peter 2:2 - And many shall follow their pernicious (lavsivious) ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

the mystery of Christ - (see Col.4:3 - above)

Matt.13:10-11 - And the disciples came and said unto him, Why speakesh thou unto them in parables? (11) He (Jesus) answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

I Cor.4:1-2 - Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. (2) Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

Luke 12:42 - And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom [his] lord shall make ruler over his household, to give [them their] portion of meat in due season?

Matt.25:21 - His lord said unto him, Well done, [thou] good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make the ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. - See - Not Everybody Shall Enter the Kingdom of Heaven

Luke 22:29 - And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

Luke 12:32 - Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

II Cor.1:7 - And our hope of you [is] stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings so [shall ye be] of the consolation.

II Tim.2:11 - If we suffer, we shall also reign with [him]: if we deny [him], he will also deny us:

for which I (Paul am also in bonds: - see Col.4:3 - above)

Phil.1:7 - Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I (Paul) have you in my heart; (or, ye have me in your heart); inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace (or, partakers with me of grace).

Eph.3:1 - For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

Eph.6:20 - For which I (Paul) am an ambassador in bonds (or, in a chain - see Acts 28:20): that therein (or, thereof) I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

II Tim.1:8 - Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the affliction of the gospel according to the power of God;

for you Gentiles - see Eph.3:1 - above)

II Tim.2:10-13 - Therefore I (Paul) endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. (11) [It is] a faithful saying: For if we be dead with [him, we shall also live with [him]: (12) If we suffer, we shall also reigh with [him]: if we deny [him], he will also deny us: (13) If we believe not, [yet] he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. - See - Baptize, Salvation, Faith, Dead and Death

So the meaning of John 10:3 is:- Jesus offered the New Testament to the Jews first, but because it was not what they were expecting, they viewed him with doubt and suspicion and many rejected the new doctrine, then Jesus gave it to the Gentiles, - (see - Acts 14:27)

So Jesus opened a door - a door of faith - so that the steward or the disciples would be able to teach the mystries of God. - (see - Col.4:3; Matt.13:10-11; I Cor.4:1-2; Luke 12:42 and Matt.25:21), and if we hear the voice of the good shepherd, he will lead us out - (see - II Tim.1:8 and II Tim.2:10-13)

Verse 4 and 5

John 10:4-5 - And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. (5) And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

the sheep follow him -

John 10:27 - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Prov.19:27 - Cease, my son, to hear the instruction [that causeth] to err from the words of knowledge.

Gal.1:8-9 - But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. (9) As we said before, so say I (Paul) now again, if any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Eph.4:14 - That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

I John :10-11 - If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into [your] house, neither bid him God speed: (11) For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Rom.16:17 - Now I (Paul) beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause division and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

Deut.4:2 - Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Deut.12:32 - What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

Prov.30:6 - Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Rev.22:18-19 - For I (John) testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man (person) shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: (19) And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book. - See - The Husband and The Bride - The Kingdom of God.

So, -

Col.2:8 - Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the rudiments (or, elements) of the world, and not after Christ.

Jer.29:8-9 - For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that [be] in the midst of you deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. (9) For they prophesy falsely (or, in a lie) unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.

Heb.13:9 - Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For [it is] a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

Jer.14:14 - Then the LORD said unto me, (Jeremiah) The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I (the Lord) sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart (or, mind, or,understanding)

Jer.23:21 - I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

Jer.27:14-15 - Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you. (15) For I have not sent them, saith the LORD, yet they prophesy a lie in my name; that I might drive you out, and that ye might perish, ye and the prophets that prophesy unto you.

Eph.5:6 - Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience (or, unbelief - see Col.3:5-6)

Matt.24:4-5 - And Jesus answered and said unto them, (the disciples), Take heed that no man deceive you (5) For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. - See - Col.2:8 and Eph.5:6

II Thes.2:3 - Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come,] except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition - see - (TheWicked One / Tares / Enemy, Devil, Satan, Serpent in -) Parable of the Kingdom and Sower Scriptural Definitions

I John 4:1 - Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. ( - see Jer.29:8 and Matt.24:4-5 above)

I Tim.4:1 - Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

II Peter 2:1 - But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that brought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

So the meaning of John 10:4 is: - we are instructed in both the Old and the New Testament to stop listening to those who would cause you to believe anything that is not written in the Bible, - (see - Col.2:8 & Eph.4:14); and to avoid them - (see - II John :10 & Rom.16:17) because the Lord did not send them nor did he speak to them, - (see - Jer.14:14 & Gal.1:9). You need to get your Bible out and read the scripture for yourself, don't believe everything your minister, preacher, pastor, priest or rabbi tells you, read it for yourself.

Jesus tells us to ...Take heed that no man deceive you, for many shall come in my name saying I am Christ; and shall deceive many, - (see - Matt.24:4-5). For in the latter times, or near the end of the age of time, there will be some who will depart from the faith and listen to seducing spirits and doctrines of the devil, - (see I Tim.4:1); and just as there were false prophets among the people in the beginning, there shall be false teachers among us today, who will bring in heresies and even denying the Lord that brought them, - (see - II Peter 2:1)

If any man (or, person) add to the words or gospel that the Lord gave us, he will add unto him the plagues written of in the book of Rev. - (see - Deut.4:2; Deut.12:32 & Rev.22:18), likewise, if any man take away or diminish from the words the Lord has given us, we will be taken away out of the book of life and out of the holy city - (see - Deut.4:2; Deut.12:32 & Rev.22:19)

So you see, I show you , or teach you, what is written in the Bible, however, I may not see the whole mystery of God the first time, but as I study, I will bring these to you. As the Bible is a very complex book, one can study their entire lifetime and still learn something new, after many, many years of study.

Verse 6 & 7

John 10:6-7 - This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. (7) Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

the door of the sheep -

Eph.2:18 - For through him we both (you and me) have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Verse 8

John 10:8 - All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.

Jer.23:1 - Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.

Ezek.34:2 - Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherd feed the flock?

Jer.50:6 - My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away [on] the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.

Acts. 5:36-38 - For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed (or, believed) him, were scattered, and brought to nought. (37) After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, [even] as many as obeyed (or, believed) him, were dispersed (or, scattered). (38) And now I (Paul) say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: (39) But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

So what John 10:8 is saying is: - Woe to the pastors who are more interested in taking in a lot of money, but who are not interested in teaching God's children his message so that they (the people) can be saved. And if you go against God's message, then you are fighting God - or you are a wicked one and you will be destroyed. - See - Wicked One / Tares / Enemy, Devil, Satan, Serpent in - Parable of the Kingdom and Sower Scriptural Definitions.

Verse 9 & 10

John 10:9-10 - I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (10) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.

thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill and to destroy:

Acts 20:29 - For I (Paul) know this, that after my departing shall grievious wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

II Peter - But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that brought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Matt.7:15 - Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Again: -

So the meaning of John 10:10 is: - once again we are told that there were false prophets in the beginning as there will be in the latter times, or near the end, even denying the Lord that brought them and they will be destroyed.

Verse 11

John 10:11 - I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

Is.40:10 -11 - Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong [hand], (or, against the strong), and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward [is] with him, and his work before him. (11) He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry [them] in his bosom, [and] shall gently lead those that are with young.

In the above verse the "he" is referring to Jesus as is also "his arm" is referring to Jesus, see next verse, - also see - The Root or Stem of Jesse - A Righteous Branch / Holy One

Ps.98:1 - O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

Ezek.34:23 - And I (God) will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, [even] my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.

Ezek.37:24 - And David my servant [shall be] king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. - see John 10:16 below.

Heb.13:20 - Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant (or, testament).

Zech 9:11 - As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant (or, whose covenant is by blood) I (the Lord) have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein [is] no water. - See explanation of prisoners in - Parable of the Tares of the Field; also see - Fountain of Living Waters vs. Cistersn.

REMEMBER: Jesus gave his life so that we might be saved.

So the meaning of John 10:11 is:- Jesus says that he is the good shepherd and that as a good shepherd, he will give his life for his sheep, (or, little flock - Luke 12:32). The Lord, or Jesus will come with a strong hand having gotten the victory over, or against the strong, the wicked ones - (see - The Enemy--The Devil and His Followers), and Jesus will gather his lambs in his arms and he will protect them. Is.40:10 and Ps.98:1

And God will set up one shepherd over them (this is his people of both the house of Judah and the house of Israel) and his servant, David, (Jesus) shall be king over them and they will walk in his judgments and observe his statutes. Ezek.34:23 and Ezek.37:24

For God brought our Lord Jesus - the great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant, or, testament. And the Lord has sent forth the prisoners out of the pit where there is no water, or word of God. Heb.13:20 and Zec.9:11

Verse 12 & 13

John 10:12-13 - But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. (13) The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

Zech.11:16 - For, lo, I (the Lord) will rise up a shepherd in the land, [which] shall not visit those that be cut off, (or, hidden), neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed (or, bear) that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces.

hireling #3411 - misthotos - AV - hireling, hired servant - 1) one hired, a hireling - from #3409 - misthoo - AV - hire - 1) to let out for hire, 2) to hire - from #3408 - apparently a primary word - AV - reward, hire, wages - 1) dues paid for work, 1a) wages, hire, 2) reward: used of the fruit naturally resulting from toils and endeavours

In the Old Testament - hireling #7916 - sakiyr - AV - hired servant, hireling, hired, hired man - 1) hired - from #7936 - sakar or (by permutation) cakar (Ezr 4:5) - AV - hire, rewardeth, wages, surely, hire out - 1b) (Niphal) to hire oneself out, 1c) Hithpael) to earn wages - a primitive root [apparently akin (by prosthesis) to #3739 through the idea of temporary purchase] - sakar - AV - hire, reward, wages, price, fare, worth - 1) hire, wages, 1b) reward, pay - from #7936 - see above

A "hireling" is someone who gets paid to do work - in this case, your pastor, minister, preacher, priest or rabbi - a hired servant - one who receives payment for work.

So the meaning of John 10:12-13 is:- the hireling is referring to somebody that is preaching to the people, or a congregation, but they are more interested in how much money they can take in rather than teach the people, because when they see the wolf coming, then they leave their sheep, or their flock, and run, and the sheep are scattered. In other words, when they (minister, priest, rabbi, etc) see the wolf/Satan, or the evil one, then they fleeth the flock, or leaves them, then the wolf catches the flock/people/sheep, or congregation and they are scattered. The pastor, minister, priest, rabbi, etc., are not there to teach them the ways and laws of God, that is - keeping the commandments of God, as well as observing the proper feasts and/or holidays, and to teach the people to do the "fruits of the Spirit," and to not follow the "ways of the flesh." - See - Parable of the Fruit--Tree of Life

Verse 14

John 10:14 - I am the shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

and know my sheep -

II Tim.2:19 - Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, (or, steady, immovable), having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity (wickedness) - See Iniquity and Vanity

am known of mine -

Phil.3:10 - That I (Paul is speaking here) may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his suffering, being made conformable unto his death;

I John 5:20 - And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, [even] in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

The meaning of John 10:14 is: - Jesus is the shepherd and he knows his sheep and the sheep know him - that Jesus, the Son of God came, gave us understanding and gave his life for his sheep and God resurrected him, and if we believe, and follow him, we will have eternal life. However, we must follow God's commandments all the time, not just for an hour or two a week, and the rest of the time do as we wish, or do our own thing; as well, we must overcome and conquer the "ways of the flesh," and strive to do the "fruits of the Spirit." See - Fountains of Living Waters vs. Cisterns; Parable of the Kingdom and the Sower; The True Vine

Verse 15

John 10:15 - As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep,

Jesus gave his life, or was crucified, so that we might be saved.

Verse 16

John 10:16 - And other sheep I (Jesus) have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, [and] one shepherd.

other sheep I (Jesus) have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; -

Is.56:8 - The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather [others] to him besides those that are gathered unto him.

These are all those of the house of Judah and the house of Israel who do not believe in Jesus Christ - they will be gathered and given the opportunity to hear and know the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

and there shall be one fold, [and] one shepherd -

Ezek.37:22 - And I (the Lord) will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:

Eph.2:14 - For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition [between us;]

Jesus will break down the middle wall of partition between the nations, or, people of the house of Judah and the house of Israel - those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and those who do not believe - all will hear his voice, and there will be one fold and one shepherd, and he (Jesus) will be king of both nations or kingdoms.

I (the Lord) will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel - (see - Ezek37:22 above)

Is.11:13 - The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the advesaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephrim.

Jer.3:18 - In those days the house of Judah shall walk with (or, to) the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.

Jer.50:4 - In those days, and in that time saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go , and seek the LORD their God.

So the meaning of John 10:16 is: - Is the two nations, kingdoms, or houses of Judah and Israel shall come together and they will not be advesaries or vex one another, and they shall join together to weep and see the Lord their God. In other words, the two houses, nations or kingdoms will come together and live and worship the same Lord in peace.

If you want to make it into the kingdom of God, then you must follow the commandments and the two great commandments and strive to do the "fruits of the Spirit. We must overcome and conquer the "works of the flesh," for these are the ways of Satan/the devil. - See - Ten Commandments; and The Great Commandments; The True Vine

I emphasize again, We must not hate our brother, or, brethren because -

I John 3:15 - Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

I John 4:20 - If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
