THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW

In this Lord's word explained document, The Purpose of The Law, I will show you that the law is meant to be our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, so that we might be justified by faith in Jesus Christ, and heirs with Christ.

All text taken from the version of the King James Bible

Gal. 3:23-29 - But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up (or, closed) unto faith with should afterwards be revealed. (24) Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. (25) But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. (26) For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. (27) For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on christ. (28) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond or free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. (29) And if ye [be[ Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise - See - Heir and Joint-Heir With Christ

Let me give you the definition for the word -

shut up #4788 - N.T. - AV - conclude, inclose, shut up; 1) to shut up together, enclose; 2) to shut up on all sides, shut up completely

from #2808 - a primary verb - AV - shut, shut up - 1) to shut, shut up, 2) metaph., 2a) to cause the heavens to withhold rain, 2b) to shut up compassion so that it is like a thing inaccessible to one, to be devoid of pity towards one, 2c) to obstruct the entrance into the kingdom of heaven, (or, closed)

the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ - Gal.3:24

Matt.5:17-20 - Think not that I (Jesus) am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (18) For verily I (Jesus) say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (19) Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them,] the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (20) For I (Jesus) say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

we might be justified by faith - Gal.3:24

Acts 13:39 - And by him (Jesus) all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus - Gal.3:26

John 1:12 - But as many as received him, (Jesus), to them gave he power (or, the right or, privilege) to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

is neither Jew nor Greek - Gal.3:28

Rom.10:12 - For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

one in Christ Jesus - Gal.3:28

John 10:16 - And other sheep I (Jesus) have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, [and] one shepherd. - See - Parable of The Good Shepherd

John 17:21 - That they all may be one; as thou, Father, [art] in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

if ye [be] Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed - Gal.3:29

Gen.21:10 - Wherefore she (Sarah) said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this woman shall not be heir with my son, [even] with Isaac.

Gal.4:28-31 - Now we brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. (29) But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, even so [it] is now. (3) Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman (31) So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Rom.9:7-8 - Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, [are they] all children: but In Isaac shall thy seed be called. (8) That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these [are] not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Now that sure sounds confusing doesn't it, let me try to explain. The word "seed" has two meanings here - 1) it is the offspring or the blood line of Isaac for generations, or forever, and 2) the "seed" is the word of God. So what this is saying is that the blood-line of Isaac are the ones who are spreading the word of God - the true "seed."

Now why did Sarah want the bondwoman and her son cast out, let us look at -

Gen.21:9 - And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Ahraham, mocking.

Now Sarah did not want them cast out because they were Egyptian, but because Sarah saw the bondwoman's son mocking.

mocking #6711 - O.T. - a primitive root - AV - laugh, mock, sport, play - 1) to laugh, mock, play, 1a) (Qal) to laugh, 1b1) to jest, 1b2) to sport, play, make sport, toy with, make a toy of

So in otherwords, the bondwoman's son was making fun or laughing at Isaac for following God and keeping God's laws.

Heb.11:18 - Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

In Isaac shall thy seed be called - Rom.9:7 and Heb.11:18

Gen.21:12 - And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grevious in thy sight because of the lad, (the bondwoman's son,) and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

In the next two verses, both Stephen and Paul are stoned. The first one, Stephen died, or fell asleep, as the bible says. The second one Paul, whose name was Saul, was stoned but did not die. Please see Temples of God--Churches for a better understanding of Saul's name being changed to Paul.

Acts 7:58 - And cast [him] Stephen out of the city, and stoned [him:] and the witness laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

Acts 14:19 - And there came thither [certain] Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and having stoned Paul, drew [him] out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

Now isn't that ironic, that Paul (whose name was Saul) was stoned, and initially Saul was the one who persecuted the church - or the people who were following the word of the Lord Jesus Christ. - Please see - Temples of God--Churches

heirs according to the promise - Gal.3:29

Rom.8:17-18 - And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him,] that we may be also glorified together. (18) For I (Paul) reckon that the suffering of this present time [are] not worthy [to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us. - See - Heirs and Joint-Heirs With Chirst

The prupose of the law is to be our schoolmaster/teacher, to bring us to Christ so that we will learn to be faithful and obedient. You cannot enter the kingdom of heaven, without following, or obeying the commandments of God - they are a way of life, or living, one must live a righteous life. Matt.5:17-20

And all are the children of God - both Jew and Greek who believe in Christ Jesus, because there is one Lord over all - Rom.10:12, and we are all one in Christ, Gal.3:28, for there shall be one fold, and one shepherd, John 10:16. And if we are of Christ's then we are Abraham's seed, Gal.3:29, and we are children of the promise, Gal.4:28, and we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free, Gal.4:31 - if we follow God and not be like the bondwoman's son in Gen.21:9

And if we are of Isaac's seed then we can become heirs according to the promise, Gal.3:29. But it all begins with keeping the commandments of God, because Jesus said, -

John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, (Thomas), I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

And -

Matt.7:13-14 - Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be with go in thereat: (14) Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Rev.14:12 - Here is the patience of the saints: (or, the holy ones,) here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

You must keep the commandments of God, but also the faith of Jesus, or you will not be able to enter into the new city of Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven.

Rev.21:1-2 - And I (John) saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. (2) and I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a birde adorned for her husband.

sea - Rev.21:1

Is. 57:20-21 - But the wicked [are] like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. (21) [There is] no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

So you see, the sea is referring to the wicked ones, and their "waters" which are negative words, against Jesus and his ways or the "waters," or words of Jesus. - See Tares; Fountain of Living Waters vs. Cisterns; The Foundations of Heaven and Earth.

But -

Rev.21:7-8 - He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I (Jesus) will be his God, and he shall be my son. (8) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. - See - Temples of God--Churches; Furnace of Fire/Lake of Fire and Brimstone; Judgment, The First Resurrection and The Second Death

Now let me explain two of the phrases found in Gal.4:28 and 29.

children of promise - Gal.4:28

Rom.4:16 - Therefore [it is] of faith, that [it might be] by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

And Isaac was the son of Abraham.

grace #5485 - N.T. - AV - grace, favour, thanks, thank, thank + #2192, pleasure - 2a) of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues

from #5463 - a primary verb - AV - rejoice, be glad, joy, hail, greeting, God speed, all hail, joyfully, farewell - 1) to rejoice, be glad, 2) to rejoice exceedingly

by grace - Rom.4:16

Rom.3:24-26 - Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (25) Whom God hath set forth (or, foreordained) [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission (or, passing over) of sins that are past, through the forebearance of God; (26) To declare, [I (Paul) say,] at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Col.3:11 - Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond [nor] free: but Christ [is] all, and in all.

Gal.3:28-29 - There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye [be] Christ's then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit - Gal.4:29

Gen.21:9 - And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking (see Gal.4:29) (10) Wherefore she (Sarah) said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, [even] with Isaac.

Cast out this bondwoman and her son: - Gen.21:10

Gen.25:6 - But unto the sons of the concubine, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.

Those born after the flesh, means they do not keep the commandments of God - they are of the wicked one, the enemy, the devil, the tares, and they persecute him that is born after the Spirit. And those who did not keep the commandments of God were sent into the east country, because if they did not keep the commandments of God, they could not be heirs with Christ. - See - Parable of the Kingdom and The Sower; Parable of the Kingdom and The Sower Scriptural Definitions; Tares; Heirs and Joint-Heirs With Christ

Every person must keep the commandments of God, they have not been done away with as Jesus said in -

[the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees - Matt.5:20

Rom.10:3 - For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

righteousness - Rom.10:3

Phil.3:9-10 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: (10) That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

And we are told in -

Rev.14:12 - Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. - See - Ten Commandments
