GRAVENHURST

Known as the first town in Muskoka, Gravenhurst is a four-season destination community, Gravenhurst has a little of everything for the outdoor adventure enthusiast. Explore hiking trails, nature preserves and inter-locking lagoons. The area is famous for awe-inspiring autumn colour - viewing tours, and for its 400-plus kms of professionally groomed snowmobile trails. Gravenhurst has a wide range of accommodations that will make your trip memorable. There are five-star resorts overlooking Lake Muskoka; peaceful lakeside cabins and campsites; and charming town and country bed and breakfast homes.

Not to be missed when in Muskoka, is a trip on North America’s oldest operating steamship – the R.M.S Segwun. This elegant vessel is the jewel of Gravenhurst, offering the best view of Lake Muskoka with June to October tours. Lunch, dinner and sunset cruises are spectacular. Don’t miss a tour of millionaires row, a must see when in Muskoka. After the cruise take in a show at the Gravenhurst Opera House, home to many world class performances.

Gravenhurst is also the birthplace of the great Canadian doctor, Dr. Norman Bethune. Famous for his inventions and innovative techniques used in thoracic surgery and the treatment of tuberculosis, Dr. Bethune is revered as a hero in China due to his humanitarian medical efforts during the war. Bethune House – Dr. Bethune’s boyhood home and a Parks Canada National Historic site – is located in downtown Gravenhurst.
Countless artisans have also fallen in love with the area’s raw, natural beauty. In their galleries you’ll find stained glass and wrought iron works, paintings and photographs, which are inspired by – and capture – the essence of Ontario wilderness and rural way of life. Plan to visit at least one potter’s studio or trek into one of the many galleries located throughout Gravenhurst.

ROYAL MAIL SHIP SEGWUN (Built in 1887)

The term "one of a kind" describes the universal appeal of the Royal Mail Ship Segwun,  a premier ship offering one of the finest Ontario cruises. Long before the era of modern highways, the Segwun, then a paddlewheeler, sailed the Muskoka Lakes from early spring to late fall, carrying passengers, mail and freight to the many resorts and villages not served by the railways.

In the 1970's, the Segwun was lovingly restored by a group of steamboat enthusiasts with a respect for heritage and a vision for the future. On June 1st, 1974, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau officially launched the refurbished Segwun and thus started her present career as a cruise ship extraordinaire.

In 2001 and 2002, the Royal Mail Ship Segwun was voted by Attractions Canada BEST LARGE ATTRACTION IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO and runner-up for the national award. This contest, launched in 1997, recognizes the merit and excellence of attractions, primarily with cultural or educational value.

Today, the Steamship Segwun sails from June through October offering a variety of cruises on the Muskoka lakes. With a capacity of 99, the Segwun is the oldest operating steamship in North America and offers passengers a chance to "step back in time" to the romance and nostalgia of Muskoka's past

Dining is a part of the Segwun experience you'll consider truly memorable. Lunch or dinner served in the Royal Muskoka Salon, with its warm gumwood panelling and panoramic view, adds an elegant touch to your cruise. Passengers sit an intimate tables set with white linen and china. The Segwun receives many compliments on the excellent cuising and fine dining facilities from visitors worldwide. Before or after your meal, enjoy a leisurely refreshment in the Nipissing Lounge and sample the Segwun Private Label selection of wine.

NEW... Part of the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival’s regular season (July 13 to August 11), Classical Tuesdays, Jazz Wednesdays and Variety Thursdays are an excellent way to spend an evening. New this year is Tuesday Night Jazz Cruises on the Wenonah II steamship, allowing for moonlight dancing across the waters and jazz music filling the night air. Every Tuesday night, from July 13 to August 10, the likes of the Swing de Paris, Bourbon Street Buskers, Swing Noir, Kory Livingston and Moodswings will play soulful tunes during a three-hour cruise.
