During his teenage years, Michael marched in a number of drum corps and indoor drumlines. He was a DCI World Championships semi-finalist three times and a Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championship finalist three times. At the age of 18, Michael began teaching and composing for drum corps and indoor drumlines.
In 2005 Michael became an artist/clinician for the Band and Orchestral division of Yamaha Music Canada. He conducts clinics, master classes, and showcases to promote drumlines in the education system. In September of 2005, Michael began the very first drumline at St. Michael's College School (SMCS) in Toronto. With over 60 students attending the first rehearsal, the ensemble consisted of 12 snare drums, six multitenors, eight bass drums, and six marching cymbals. The SMCS Drumline performed at school sporting and social events and local parades.
In May 2006, Michael, with his SMCS Drumline, performed ten clinics at the Canadian National Musicfest at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. With ten thousand students and teachers in attendance, Michael and his drumline wowed audiences and inspired the intiation of several new drumlines throughout the country. In 2007, Michael conducted drumline clinics at conferences for the BC and Ontario Music Educators' Association.
In 2008, Yamaha Music Canada initiated their "Start the Groove" program with Michael. Touring across Canada, Michael has conducted over 100 clinics from Halifax to Vancouver to help start new drumlines in Canadian high schools.
Currently, Michael is continuing as the percussion head of the SCMS Drumline, and is a consultant for the new drumlines at Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School in Toronto, West Humber Collegiate in Toronto, St Marcelinus in Mississauga ON, St Martin’s Secondary School in Mississauga, and Colborne Public School in Colborne.
