I have worked extensively in watercolors, oils, pastels and pencil over the past many years, and while I enjoy most mediums I have come to prefer pencil. It is perhaps the oldest medium dating back to our ancestors depicting their daily life on cave walls with charcoal sticks. I happen to like it because I can pick it up and put it down with little concern for the mess I am leaving behind, and since it does not smell bad, I do not get into trouble at home. The attached pages present three pencil works. Two of these have been retrieved and reproduced in limited quantity. Fortunately black and white artwork does works well in a printers world and I am quite happy with the quality that they have achieved. As you will see I have a preference for wildlife. While I do not have the time to sit in the woods and wait for my subject to happen by, I am fortunate to have the Granby Zoo about thirty minutes away, and I manage to make regular pilgrimages to the Toronto Metro Zoo. Both provide a wealth of subject matter for me to sketch and photograph. The horse subjects come from my daughter's association with the local pony club. The time we spend there gets me up close, and on occasion too close, to the subject matter. Three current projects, that I hope you will soon see on these pages, reflect our association with the club. Princess' Picnic is nearing completion. Different views will be available later . Jacob's 45th Birthday will be a portrait of the pony clubs oldest inhabitant and in which I may, or may not add a little color based on the fall foliage. Jacob passed away recently at the ripe old age of 51. A fourth, Melanie's Prize, will come from a winning pose at the local annual fair featuring a wagon cart pulled by an enormous Belgian. The most recent addition to the home page is of Princess who stayed with the Pony Club for a couple of years. She was quite the character and was eventually retired due to her propensity for relaxation. |
