The Butterfly cluster in Scorpius

10.1'' reflector  43 x

Spectacular open cluster in southern Scorpius, the Butterfly looks somewhat like its namesake. Probably about 100 stars within a 40' area, four brighter stars mark the core of the cluster. Burnham's lists the cluster as containing 80 stars in a 54' field that spans about 20 light years; the cluster is roughly 700 light years away and is about 100 million years old, or half the age of M7. Star magnitudes range from 6 to 10.
