CITY HALL BELL
by Ross W. Irwin

Bell was cast in white brass in 1856 by the Menelly Bell Works, Troy, NY. It weighed 2,075 lb.

The original market house bell tower was replaced in 1869 and the four-faced clock within the tower was raised so it could be viewed from upper Wyndham Street.

The clock and bell were removed August 8, 1961. In Feb 1962 the bell was set on a cairn, with plaque, in Riverside Park..

City Council established when the bell should be rung. The bell had not been rung for many years except on WW II Victory Day in 1945, and for the Coronation of Elizabeth II, June 2, 1953.
