Guelph Mercury Historical Columns
Dr.A. E. Byerly contributed a column "Early Days in Guelph and District" in The Review.
Vernon McIlwraith wrote a column "Member Way Back" from 06 Mar 1948 to 1964, many featured a senior citizen plus a photograph. From 22 May 1952 he began a column under the name "Vane" entitled "Current Comment". From 30 June 1952 he used his own name. The column continued until Vern retired in 1971. He also wrote a column "In Days of Yore" in the early 1960's. - 65 and "As it Happened" from 1970 to 3/1979. McIlwraith died in 1981.
Findlay I. Weaver's came from Kitchener to Guelph. His columns are better researched than McIlwraith's. Fin began a series "Glancing Back to Districts Early Days" from 6 Mar 1948 to 2 Jun 1962. Findlay's major column was "Lore of Bygone Days", from Jun 1948 to 9 Jun 1967 when he retired at age 89.
Other columns were "Way Back Echoes" Fergus, Erin, 1952 - 1954, and "Book Lore" 1959.

The major history series were:
James Innes, Editor, Guelph Evening Mercury, wrote a series of weekly columns from 11 Jan 1866 to 21 Jun 1866 which covered the history of the county. It is a benchmark work.
W.F. Mackenzie wrote a series of 15 columns on Pioneer Days in Wellington which began 25 Feb 1899 and concluded 27 Sep 1900.
W.F. Mackenzie also wrote a very lengthy series which began 18 Jan 1907 and continued to 23 Jul 1908.
David Allan wrote a weekly series on History of Guelph which began 21 Dec 1940 and went to 15 Mar 1941.
James Innes McIntosh, nephew of the former James Innes and Editor, Guelph Daily Mercury initiated the benchmark 132 page, 8 section, edition of the 1927 Mercury.
