What the Kids do at St. Matthias

Little ones

St. Matthias enjoys active and growing children's programmes. Our dedicated programme leaders provide opportunities for all ages to learn about aspects of their faith, gain understanding of what it means to be Christian, and have a lot of fun.

The Children's Worship group meet every Sunday (well, obviously, given the name) during the service, but always join the rest of the congregation for Communion. There are separate activities for little ones and not so little ones -- there is also child-minding for the really little ones.

Every few months, the children and adults join together in celebrating an Intergenerational Mass, where the children undertake positions of candles and cross bearers, join in the choir, read the lessons and even give the homily. This is always a very rewarding experience for all involved, regardless of age.

As well as the more "serious" activities of discussing the readings and gospel and preparing for Communion, the Children's Worship group also give a lot to the whole church community, including:

  • a fully performed and originally scripted pageant at Easter and Christmas
  • making wreaths for Advent, pancakes for "Shrove Sunday", and cupcakes when they really feel like treating the rest of us (yum!)
  • organizing neighbourhood food drives, and a bi-annual church sale
  • letting us grown ups tag along on their skating and rollerblading outings, picnics on Toronto Island and visits to the water park!!
  • Our new Lectionary based curriculum, has been in effect since September 2010.
