Dec 2002 - The following, thanks to Brian Derick, is still being researched.
"There have been some indications that upon his arrival in Canada, thought to be sometime in the late 1830's or prior to 1843, Henry Naylor lived for a time in the vicinity of Lake Orford, Quebec prior to settling in the Noyan, Quebec area. His first wife, Elizabeth Hawley, was the daughter of Josephus Vaughan, a United Empire Loyalist and one of the earliest settlers of the Eastern Townships, and Elizabeth Hawley, also from an early and prominent pioneering family. The Vaughan family owned the farm on the Richelieu River from which was operated for many years the earliest ferry on that part of the River. Known originally as "Vaughan's Ferry" and "Vaughan's Point", the original house was demolished in the late 1960's, and the farm is now known as Remember Point, after an American officer who was killed there during the War of 1812(?). This farm later passed to B.V. Naylor, son of Henry Naylor." |

| Received the Prince of Wales Gold Medal, McGill University, 1872. Author of book "The Church at Clarendon". Venerable Archdeacon of Clarendon. Priest in Shawville Que. from 1876 to 1907. |
Notes for JANET STRUTHERS:
| From announcement in Shawville Que. newspaper, thought to be The Shawville Equity, some time in Oct. 1932. Funeral of the late Mrs. W. H. Naylor The death of Mrs. Naylor, which was briefly mentioned in our last issue, occured at the home of her son, Rev H .A. Naylor, in Montreal, on Monday, Oct. 10. The late Mrs. Naylor spent the summer at her home in Phillipsburg, Que., and had enjoyed good health until two weeks ago, following her return to the city, when she contracted a severe cold which developed into pneumonia. The remains of the deceased arrived on Tuesday evening and were placed in the St. Paul's Church awaiting the funeral on the following morning which was attended by many friends and acquaintances who gathered to pay their tribute of respect to one who held so high a place in the esteem of all, particularly the older parishioners of Shawville and Clarendon. In the absence of a resident Rector, the service was conducted by the Rev'ds E. F. Macklin, of Portage du Fort and W. LeCras, of Quyon. Internment was made in the family plot in St. Paul's cemetery. Surviving are five sons, namely, Rev. H. A., of Montreal; Wm. S., of Toronto; Hawley and Rev. R. K., Montreal; James, of Coleman Alta., and Clarence, of Oak River, Man., the latter two being unable to attend the funeral. The pall-bears were her four sons and two grand-sons, Edgar Naylor of Phillipsburg, and Walter Naylor, of Toronto. Other relatives attending were Mrs. H. A. Naylor, Mrs. Hawley Naylor and Mrs. Edgar Naylor. The late Mrs. Naylor, formerly Miss Janet Struthers, was born in Noyan, Que., on the 16th of Feb 1849. Her husband, William Herbert Naylor, was born in Noyan also on the 5th day of May, 1846. They grew up on two farms half a mile apart and were married in 1872 by Rev. Canon DuVernet in St. Thomas' church in Noyan, where their parents and grand-parents rest. Mr. & Mrs. Naylor began their married life at Phillipsburg, Que., 20 miles from their former homes. Mr. Naylor taught the local school until his ordination and appointment to the parish church. In 1876 they came to Shawville with their two sons, where they lived for thirty-one years. Six sons were born here; two dying in infancy. During this period, her life was earnestly devoted to the work of her husband in this parish and she endeared herself to many with her kindly acts and her great hospitality. The Rectory was a place where all were warmly welcomed. In 1907 Archdeacon and Mrs. Naylor removed to Farnham, Que., where they resided until 1917. On June 6, of the following year, the Archdeacon entered into rest at Phillipsburg. Four years ago a clock was installed in the tower of St. Paul's and dedicated to his memory, and it was on this occasion that Mrs. Naylor made her last trip to Shawville and worshipped in the Church which had derived untold benefit from her labours. |

"Travelled to the B.C. coast as a young man and worked in the forestry industry. Enlisted with the 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles, Montreal) of the Canadian Army in World War One and served with distinction. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field at the Battle of Vimy Ridge). Son of Richelieu River steamship Capt. Benjamin Vaughan Naylor, he became an accomplished boatman in his youth, and spent many decades as a Hudson's Bay Company steamboat captain in the far north. His commands included the H.B.Co. Distributor, a large sternwheeler which sailed from Great Slave Lake to the Arctic and back carrying passengers and cargo. Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor General of Canada, accompanied him on one of these trips in the 1930s. Prior to his marriage, he operated a trap line alone in the far north for many years. For several years following his retirement to Victoria, B.C., Capt. Naylor served in B.C. coastal waters and on the Fraser River as a consultant in aids to navigation with the Canadian Coast Guard. Notes for REUBEN KENNETH NAYLOR:
| Clipping from the Canadian Churchman - November 1964 AFTER 90 YEARS NO NAYLOR ON ACTIVE CLERGY LIST For the first time in more than 90 years last month there was no clergman by the name of NAYLOR on the active list of the diocese of Montreal. Archdeacon Kenneth Naylor retired after 52 years in holy orders. His father, Archdeacon W. H. Naylor, died in 1918 after 45 years in the ministry. During his 52 years' service Kenneth Naylor was licensed to only three positions - rector of Rawdon, Que., 1912-25; lecturer in New Testament at the Diocesan College, 1925-40; and rector of Trinity Memorial, Monreal, since 1940. But his activities in church and community ranged a far wider field. He served on the Protestant Committee of the Council of Education of the province of Quebec and the Greater Montreal Protestant School Board. He lectured in Christian Ethics in the McGill Divinity Faculty. He founded the Montreal Diocesan Book Room and lovingly sheperded it for more than a generation. He was a co-founder of the Fellowship of the West. Outside the diocese Archdeacon Naylor's voice was heard in General Synod for 35 years, and he served on the General Board of Religious Education for 40. He was vice-chairman of the Ecumenical Affairs committee and represented the Anglican Church of Canada at biennial meetings of the Canadian Council of Churches. Archdeacon Naylor will be 79 in December. |
