HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE The Ivy Manor, named after its english ivy covered exterior, was built in 1883 for Henry T. Bunbury. Mr. Bunbury was a highly respected court official who served as Clerk of the First Division Court for the County of Wentworth from 1877 until his sudden death in 1913. The first floor of the Ivy Manor was originally used for daily living and entertaining, the second floor for family sleeping quarters, while the third floor provided modest accommodations for the servants. While there have
been some
modifications to the exterior of the home over the last 120+ years, the
main structure has remained mostly unchanged. Among some of the
changes:
the men's smoking room is now used as a large home office, the
second
floor which previously served as just bedrooms is now a complete 1500 sq
ft apartment
unto itself,
and some of the elaborate
ceiling light fixtures were converted from gas to electricity, just
to name a few. Classic features such as the marble/cast
iron radiator covers, 11 and 12 foot ceiling heights, ornate crown
moldings
and ceiling medallions have remained intact, demonstrating the fine
craftmanship
of an era gone by.
RESIDENT PETS There are three
little furballs that reside on the first floor with Bill, Sandy and
Emma -
they are a
finicky feline named Soozie, a bouncy
Jack Russell named Chip
and a huggable shih tzu named Teddy.
The first floor apartment
is completely separate from the guest quarters though, so you may never
even see them. |
