"anomaly" appears in Blood Poems, published by Fiddlehead Press in 1978.

we write. we write
in this strange tongue
but our breathpauses
our natural inclinations to rhythm
are cantatorial.

for in our inner ears
lie foreign sounds:
pause for breath between
one benediction and another
one curse and another:
blood frogs blood locusts blood darkness
blood of the first born son

between the golem
and the harpist
no song raised itself
but terror

we are left, like moses:
our mouths dry, our tongues swollen,
we seek the perfect line, invent syllables

breathing becomes a parable
