A life long dream of Helen Marshall was to have a place where she could provide loving care for disadvantaged animals an birds.
This began with abandoned domestic animals such as dogs, cats, horses, and many others. In 1988 Spruce Haven began operation as a
private Zoo with a small number of exotic an native animals and birds which had been abandoned or injured.
Spruce Haven has now become Sault Ste. Marie's municipal Zoo.
The mission of Spruce Haven is to be a safe haven for disadvantaged animals an birds, and also to promote an understanding of
animals and birds as they relate to people and the enviroment.
The Zoo now has more than 100 residents with origins from around the world. Some will be relesed or
placed with others Zoos or caring organizations. Others not suitable for release or replacement have a permanent safe home at
Spruce Haven and receive the attention needed to be happy.
There are some very happy stories and many contented residents at Spruce Haven. The happy faces of those visitors who can see
those stories, speak for themselves.
