Reversals

A reversal clue is one in which the word is clued in its reverse direction (backwards for an across-word; backwards or upwards for a down-word).  A reversal indicator will therefore refer to the letters of the word being written in a backwards or upwards direction.  Some examples are:

backwards, back, sent back, left, reversed, turned around, to the west, from the east

up, hiking, upwardly-mobile, raised, climbing, brought up, upset, turned over, northbound

Sample clue:

Lurch cast a sidelong glance in return (4)
The answer is again REEL.  The definition is Lurch (disguised as a name; remember the Addams family?).  Cast a sidelong glance (leer), when written backwards (in return) confirms it.
