Stuart Chase reminds us that common sense is that which tells you the world is flat. While a healthy dose of it is essential to bursting some of the more ridiculous abstractions we're forced to confront, you need to keep in mind that the skill of common sense is itself based on an abstraction - the idea that life is basically straightforward and easy to understand. Because of this, common sense is every bit as susceptible to ridiculousness as, say, Symbolic Interactionism or Monetarism.
