The Triumph of Form Over Content When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

You Are Here: Home -> Glossary -> Ignorance

Ignorance

To be ignorant is to ignore. That is, to refuse to take notice. An ignorant person is one who refuses to take notice of knowledge which challenges a particular world view or ideology. By ignoring inconvenient facts which contradict the ideology, the ignorant person is able to preserve its grosser elements. Contradictions that are too big to ignore are transformed into exceptions, as in the 'exception that proves the rule'.

I call it the Sammy Davis Junior syndrome. As the proverbial 'black man in a white man's world', Sammy Davis Junior had to put up with almost constant racism from his peers. When he challenged a racist joke or anecdote, people would invariably respond with, 'You're not black, you're Sammy Davis Junior!'
