CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF INTERNET PROVIDERS ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE AS IT LOOKS AHEAD TO '97-98

CAIP to tackle broad range of issues as Internet industry matures in Canada

TORONTO, June 13 /CNW/ - The Canadian Association of Internet Providers (CAIP), is a non-profit alliance of more than 70 leading companies in Canada's Internet industry, and is now preparing to tackle a host of issues with a new executive board: Margo Langford, from iSTAR internet inc., was elected Chair of CAIP. Other members of the board executive include: Vice Chair, Rob Hall, of Echelon Internet Corp; Secretary, Bill Neale, of BC Tel; and Treasurer, Scott Knapman, of Bell Canada. CAIP continues to be managed by its President, Ron Kawchuk.

Last November, CAIP made news becoming one of the first Internet industry associations in the world to develop a voluntary code of conduct, setting out a process for CAIP members to self-regulate and remove illegal content, in partial response to a rash of Internet-related child pornography arrests. As the industry matures, the association, made up of some of the largest players in Canada's Internet industry as well as many small independent ISPs, is working to strike a balance between domestic issues, such as court challenges and possible federal government regulation, while striving to represent the Canadian Internet industry to international bodies seeking to establish global administrative structures for the Internet, such as Domain Name registries.

"Education and public awareness about the Internet - especially how it works and what it will take to allow Canadian Internet businesses to flourish, is vital right now, as the Internet industry faces regulation from courts, tribunals and policy makers," says Langford. "And as the Internet expands with new applications, such as electronic commerce, it will be important for CAIP to continue to facilitate the global expression of Canadian culture and commerce."

The new Board takes over from the impressive efforts of the founding Chairman, Ken Fockler, of CANet, and the outgoing Executive who formed the organization in April 1996, and grew it in its first year from 12 to 70 members, while becoming one of the leading voices for the Industry, broadly consulting with the federal government and several regulatory bodies and associations. CAIP also worked closely with Statistics Canada to provide some of the first snapshots of the rapidly growing Internet industry.

CAIP is a non-profit association of more than 70 providers of Internet services and associated suppliers. CAIP's mission is to foster the growth of a healthy and competitive Internet service industry in Canada through collective and co-operative action on issues of mutual interest. CAIP's membership list, polices and activities can be viewed on its web site located at: www.caip.ca.
