Anableps anableps

As the picture of some of our Anableps might suggest, we are, and have been, enthusiastic tropical fish hobbyists for the past thirty years. We're strictly amateurs but we've had some good luck from time to time and we hope to use this site to share a bit of information and a few pictures related to this beautiful hobby. If you're new to tropical fish or just want a basic refresher course, be sure to read Pat's Basic Guide to a Successful Aquarium.
February

We're members of the St. Catharines & Area Aquarium Society (SCAAS) where Pat held the position of Editor of The SCAT newsletter for 9 1/2 years. Perhaps the most famous issue was the colour edition from April 1998 because we had 500 copies and we could afford to spread them around. Whenever possible, Pat added a bit of colour to The SCAT just to emphasize the part it plays in our beautiful hobby. The June 2000 edition was her last. The editorship has now passed to Dave Unruh. We wish him continued success in this venture.
Our club now has its own web site called scaas.info. Feel free to pay it a visit.

Last year the Brant Aquarium Society took charge of the CAOAC Convention. It was held at the Best Western (Brant Park Inn) May 20 - 23. This year the Aquarium Society of Winnipeg will host the Convention, Easter Weekend 2012. For more information check the CAOAC website and look for details. If you love this hobby and you don't mind travelling you'll want to attend!

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, Mar. 5th, 2012, at our regular meeting place, the Teamster's Union Hall, 70 St. David's St. in Thorold (map) at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
Our club put on a successful ****Fish Show and Auction**** on Sunday, October 23rd. We'd like to thank all those who took part. For details go to scaas.info and click on the menu item Show and Auction.
As to our regular meeting in November we had an amazing presentation by Ernest Biktimirov called "Aquarium Hobby Collections". I learned about 3 more fish related collecting hobbies than I even knew existed. It was a very impressive program with samples and even giveaways.
December's meeting was all about delicious potluck food and a giant free raffle for the membership plus a visit from the 'man in red'.
February's program was--a beautiful presentation on a nature preserve in Costa Rica with emphasis on the many species of tropical fish found and, in some cases, collected there by Tom Mason of the Toronto Zoo. Tom shared the wealth of knowledge acquired during his years of travel to and work in that area of Central America.
The program for March is To Be Announced. There will be a jar show this month featuring "Aquarium Plants" as 'Fish' Of the Month. There will also be a door prize draw for those who sign in and wear their name tags. We will have our mini-auction, (likely lots of great quality fish, plants and other aquarium stuff from local hobbyists). Refreshments will be available and there will undoubtedly be good fellowship and great chances to 'talk fish'. Our library books may be available this month. All those interested in tropical fish are most welcome. It will be a pleasure to see you there.

Breeding Discus

This site will change to reflect what's happening in our hobby and what's going on at the St. Catharines club. We hope some of it will be useful or, at least, interesting. We'll feature more fish pictures and interesting aquatic information in the future. In the meantime keep your fish wet and warm and don't forget to take pictures.
To find out about lots of other excellent Tropical Fish Clubs and upcoming events click on CAOAC 'Canadian Association of Aquarium Clubs' and/or FAAS 'Federation of American Aquarium Societies'.

The Calgary Aquarium Society has a site still well worth a visit by those who love fish.
