Planet Earth is a series of 6 pieces which feature human
living
environments installed in the dusty interiors of TV sets. These digital
compositions show an inversion in which the spaces typically found
surrounding a television set, are located within.
Television has merged into dynamic networks of technology and is no longer confined to a single piece of furniture. I found myself looking at an old television set and for the first time began to realize the nostalgic side of this object that has been long associated with the push to the future. In this context, the plastic shell of the television serves as a sort of space capsule with all the necessities of life contained inside, the personal effects associated with daily human activity nestled within the components of the system, stuck in spaces between the wiring, with faded technical labels adorning the walls. Outside the windows there are views of outer space, with constellations as far as the eye can see. I included a plaque in one of the images, it reads: HISTORIC
MOMENT - TO COMMEMORATE
THIS MARVEL OF
MODERN SCIENCE - THIS SYSTEM FOR TRANSMITTING BITS OF LIGHT, ALLOWING MANKIND TO SEE AT A DISTANCE. IT WAS A DREAM THAT BECAME REALITY - TELEVISION. 'I SEE EARTH! IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL.' - Y.G. The text closes with a quote from Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in outer space. In this series, the ability to see the world anew from the vantage point of a rocket ship or by way of television are brought together as related endeavours. Dans la série Calling Planet Earth, je compose des modèles imaginaires, qui opèrent comme métaphore d’une mécanique qui serait à l’œuvre dans le développement de la culture télévisuelle. MOMENT
HISTORIQUE - POUR COMMÉMORER CETTE MERVEILLE ‘JE VOIS LA TERRE! ELLE EST SI BELLE.’ – Y.G. (Yuri Gagarin) [Citation
