Aeration is a simple, natural solution
to maintaining quality water.
Oxygen is a natural cleanser. It is the key ingredient for quality water. Aeration, by either windmill or an electric aerator can be easily used year-round to
supply oxygen to your pond, cistern, lagoon, or well. Air is placed at the bottom of the pond, turning the water from bottom to top, thereby oxygenating the whole pond. Aeration is the only method that works with nature to keep your water clean. It allows the natural processes to continue without upsetting the balance of the environment. Microscopic bacteria, known as aerobic bacteria, work to decompose plant material in the water. However, these "good" bacteria require oxygen. As these bacteria work, they burn up the supply of oxygen in the water. When the oxygen is exhausted, anaerobic (or non-using oxygen) "bad" bacteria
begin to decompose the plant matter. This is when your water begins to smell and
taste bad due to gasses (like hydrogen sulphide) that are released into your pond.
