This winter we did not have snow cover for any appreciable length of time. There was an early freeze followed by periods of freezing and thawing, which I think was the biggest factor in the poor vigor and survival of rose canes. Those roses that died—Jude the Obscure, Blossomtime, Marie Daly—were in poor health to begin with. I was surprised by the poor performance of Marchioness of Londonderry and the climbers Autumn Sunset and Westerland, which were very vigorous plants in my garden for 2 years. Perhaps the drought and loss of leaves last summer had a lot to do with their poor showing through the winter. Rouge Royale, Fair Bianca and Mrs. John Laing were own root babies planted in summer ’02 and were never very vigorous.
