The Fighting Steel project naval simulation is a real time (speed is adjustable so you have lots of time to input orders) 3D surface combat simulation covering 1939-1945 (some WWI scenario also). You can fight battles in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters with American, British, German, French, Russian, Dutch, Italian and Japanese warships. Features include flexible viewpoints, a random scenario generator, a scenario editor, multiplayer for up to 4 commanders, a very intuitive interface, and lots of realism options to choose from. If you like Naval WWII warfare you will not find a better supported (version10.0) simulation.

Hearts of Iron 2 is the sequel to the most appreciated World War II PC game of true Grand Strategic scope ever made. As in its forbear (Hearts of Iron I), the map spans the entire world and allows you to play one of over 175 countries during the course of World War II. The game has a sophiscated combat system, strategic map, easy-to-use interface, new technology tree and hundreds of other updates and improvements.
Like its predecessor, Hearts of Iron 2 gives the player control of a multitude of nations in various scenarios ranging from 1936 to 1948. The player has control of their chosen nation's military forces, diplomatic relations, production, and policies. The player may guide their nation in step with history's or attempt to deviate it. Each policy shift and each political decision has benefits and consequences. Some of which may not be realized until later down the road.
Even the most detailed war games mostly just concentrate on the battles themselves. With the HOI series, everything you have done leading up to a battle is likely going to be just as important or even more so than the battle itself. Although I find it has a learning curve it can be understood in 2-3 games but rarely mastered.
No doubt the best strategic/production wargame covering 1936-1948 a definite must for world war II enthusiasts.
