The 50 most common surnames (Standardized)
The following names are taken from Baptism registers, generally speaking it's more common for a person to be married out of town than it is for their parents to take them out of town to be baptized. Though burials also would provide a reasonable view of the name patterns, I feel baptisms are best to use for this purpose.
This list shows my "standardized form" of the name, which does not imply that it's the most common spelling used.. It's just what I felt is the first place I'd look for a name group when searching my database. The number attached to each name, is the number of legible baptisms that occurred in Lamerton that were of that surname, plus the number that had illegible surnames, that I've extrapolated from other data to be "most likely" that surname.
The Period covered so far by this survey is 1545-1823
This list contains more than 50, but some names just falling outside of 50, were prominent names in this area of Devon, so I extended the list to 75.
In total, after a basic standardization, I have 362 Standardized surnames in Lamerton. Though there are other single occurrence names which I have not added to this list, it would likely top 400, were I to do all single occurrence names.
